McDermott Will & Emery announced today that Paul Hastings health care chair James F. Owens has joined the Firm as a partner in its Health Industry Advisory Practice Group in Los Angeles.
Mr. Owens has practiced health care law for more than 25 years, serving as counsel to providers and suppliers, including multi-facility health systems, free-standing district and community hospitals, children’s hospitals, California medical foundations, and large medical groups.
“Jim is a perfect fit with McDermott’s prestigious team of leading health lawyers,” said Peter J. Sacripanti, co-chair of McDermott Will & Emery LLP. “His outstanding legal qualifications and leadership skills will expand our clients’ access to some of the best strategic counsel available today.”
“Jim is a widely known, highly accomplished health lawyer who is committed to working with his colleagues to deliver unmatched client service,” added McDermott co-chair Jeffrey E. Stone. “We have long known and respected Jim’s work, especially in the growing area of hospital-physician integration.”
“Over the span of his career, Jim has advised some of the biggest names in the California health market. His breadth and depth of experience will be very valuable to us as we counsel our clients to stay ahead of the many complex and fast-changing health issues,” said Stephen W. Bernstein, partner and head of McDermott’s Health Industry Advisory Practice Group.
A leading practitioner in California on physician/hospital integration matters, Mr. Owens has provided ongoing representation to various community hospitals throughout the state. He also has experience resolving disputes between medical practice foundations and the physician organizations with whom they contract.
“I’m delighted to join McDermott Will & Emery, which I consider to be in a class by itself in the area of health law,” said Mr. Owens. “I’m particularly excited to offer my clients access to the McDermott health platform in such key areas as fraud and abuse counseling, drug pricing/340B work, research and privacy, and white collar defense.”
Mr. Owens is considered one of the leading lawyers in health care. He is a past president of the Health Care Law Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association and former chair of the American Health Lawyers Association’s (AHLA) Hospitals and Health Systems practice group. Mr. Owens is recognized by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business (2007-present) in Band 1 for California Healthcare; The Best Lawyers in America (2012-present); and Lawyers Guide to Health Care Law, Corporate Counsel magazine (2012). He serves on the Board of Directors of the NALP Foundation for Law Career Research, and is a member of AHLA and the California Society for Healthcare Attorneys, the National Leadership Council and the LAMBDA Legal Defense and Education Fund.
