Nixon Peabody Strengthens Its California Healthcare Practice with Two Litigation Partners

Nixon Peabody continues its West Coast expansion with the addition of health care litigation partners Andrew H. Selesnick and Damaris L. Medina. With clients ranging from physicians and physician groups to hospitals and urgent care centers, substance abuse treatment providers and ambulatory surgery centers, Andy and Damaris have successfully litigated a number of high-profile health care cases, many in the health care reimbursement arena.

“Expanding our health care practice in California has been a top priority for us. Andy and Damaris are highly accomplished litigators who are well-known in the industry, and who have successfully handled many of the major payor disputes in the state. They will be great assets to both our health care and commercial litigation practices,” said Jill Gordon, Los Angeles Health Care partner and member of Nixon Peabody’s Management Committee. “Andy and Damaris bring deep industry knowledge and understand the challenges our clients are facing, especially given the uncertain future of the Affordable Care Act. They are innovative and invested in the success of our clients.”

Additionally, Andy and Damaris defend providers in Office of Inspector General (OIG) and government investigations as well as payer recoupment and Special Investigation Unit (SIU) issues. They routinely represent health care providers in complex business disputes and counsel their clients on contracting, acquisitions, business formation and dissolution, and risk management. They have secured precedent-setting decisions for their clients.

“We are thrilled that Andy and Damaris have joined our team. Their health care litigation practice nicely complements the transactional health care and life sciences work that we do in California,” added Seth Levy, managing partner of Nixon Peabody’s Los Angeles office. “Their arrival gives us the opportunity to advance our industry focus and provide our clients with additional complex commercial litigation and health care litigation capabilities.”

Andy has appeared before the California State Senate and State Assembly to comment on legislation and regulations affecting health care providers. He is a member of the California Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Medical Group Management Association, and the Urgent Care Association of America. Andy graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law and earned his B.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Damaris is a member of the California Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians and sits on the board of the Urgent Care Association of America. She earned her J.D. from Suffolk University Law School and her B.A. from Tufts University.
