Richard Giller, a skilled insurance recovery litigator with over three decades of experience, has joined Pillsbury’s market leading Insurance Recovery & Advisory team in Los Angeles. Giller was formerly a partner at Reed Smith LLP.
Giller’s practice is concentrated on the recovery of insurance benefits on behalf of both corporate and individual clients across the country. He has experience with a variety of types of insurance coverage and has successfully secured hundreds of millions of dollars of defense and indemnity payments for clients across numerous insurance lines.
Giller has established a reputation as a leading lawyer handling sports insurance claims, including representing college and professional athletes and sports teams in connection with permanent total disability, temporary total disability, loss-of-value, and workers’ compensation insurance policies and claims. In addition, he has significant experience in analyzing event cancellation insurance, cast and crew insurance, and other entertainment-related products, as well as helping policyholders obtain coverage for business interruption losses, crime and cyber losses, and political risks.
“Richard is one of the few lawyers in the country with in-depth experience representing athletes, entertainers and teams in maximizing their claims,” said Robert Wallan, co-chair of Pillsbury’s Insurance Recovery & Advisory practice. “Beyond growing and enhancing our policyholder team on the West Coast and nationally, his practice also complements our strong entertainment and higher education practices. He’s really just a great fit for us all around.”
Giller’s arrival continues the growth of one of the largest and most experienced insurance practices in the United States. Earlier this year in Washington, D.C., Pillsbury’s Insurance Recovery & Advisory practice recruited senior counsel Barry Fleishman and promoted Matthew Jeweler to partner. In late 2018, the group expanded its Los Angeles-based team with the arrivals of partner Steve Knott and senior counsel Joan Cotkin.
“Pillsbury is the premier firm when it comes to representing policyholders in insurance disputes,” Giller said. “Between that sterling reputation and my positive experiences in the past working with lawyers here, the decision to join was easy. It’s a great team and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
Pillsbury’s renowned Insurance Recovery & Advisory lawyers advise clients in the placement and structuring of insurance programs, in claim negotiation and in coverage disputes, with a lengthy track record of success at trial, arbitration and appeal. The group is nationally ranked in Chambers and one of the three policyholder-side practices recently nominated by Chambers as the 2018 Insurance Practice Group of the Year. It is also consistently lauded as a leading practice by The Legal 500 U.S. and U.S. News/ Best Lawyers and is a three-time Law360 “Insurance Practice of the Year” honoree.
