Kennedys Adds Commercial Litigation Stars to Rapidly Growing Melbourne Team

We are pleased to announce that highly regarded commercial litigation partner Jane Kupsch and senior associate Lucy Reade have joined our growing Melbourne office today. Both were formerly at Piper Alderman.

Jane’s expertise is in the defence of litigation arising from large-scale corporate collapses, regulatory investigations and in a wide range of commercial and shareholder disputes. She is one of very few litigators accredited by the Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) as a specialist in Commercial Litigation and chairs LIV’s Commercial Litigation Specialist Advisory Committee. Jane is listed in Best Lawyers Australia for Class Action Litigation.

Lucy, in addition to her litigation skills, has significant experience in the use of technology to manage large-scale disputes, and previously worked in London advising on remediation projects for major financial institutions.

Jane and Lucy have worked together since 2015, first at boutique litigation firm Brian Ward & Partners and more recently at Piper Alderman.

Matt Andrews, managing partner of Kennedys in Australia said: “Jane’s appointment comes at a time of significant growth, especially in our Melbourne office which has tripled in size to 30 staff since we opened in late 2017.

“Jane is an absolute all-rounder whose experience perfectly aligns with our business priorities. She is a trusted adviser to her clients when litigation is necessary, but she also provides strategic and practical pre-litigation advice to companies and their boards on matters including risk management and insurance.”

In the last 12 months we have increased headcount in our Australian offices by 25 percent and significantly boosted our senior staff ranks, adding in 2019:

special counsels Maya Parbhoo, formerly of Moray & Agnew, practising in medical negligence and healthcare liability; Bryan Mueller, a former barrister with more than 25 years’ experience in employment law, industrial relations and administrative law; and Jonathon Lees, ex-Wotton+Kearney, who practises in financial lines insurance and subrogation.
senior associates Jasmine Sandhu, a lateral hire from State Trustees practising in personal injury; and employment lawyer Naomi Cooper, who was promoted in September.
Nick Thomas, senior partner at Kennedys, says: “Our strategy of growth centred on client need continues apace, and our focus on attracting the highest calibre of talent is paying dividends. I’m delighted with how the firm is developing in Australia and fully expect that growth to continue there and across the globe.”

Jane Kupsch says: “There are few firms with the ambition of Kennedys and I am thrilled to become a part of it. There’s a real synergy with Kennedys’ goals and our experience, so Lucy and I look forward to growing the commercial litigation practice in Melbourne further.”

“Jane and Lucy are a proven team whose skills and approach are a great fit for us, and I am delighted to welcome them to Kennedys,” said Matt Andrews.
