K&L Gates Bolsters Intellectual Property and Trade Mark Capabilities in Melbourne

Global law firm K&L Gates continues to grow its Intellectual Property (IP) and trade mark capabilities with the appointment of partner Sally Foreman, based in Melbourne. Foreman joins K&L Gates from Davies Collison Cave, where she was a Principal and Trademark Attorney.

Foreman has over two decades of experience as IP counsel to some of Australia’s largest corporations, managing large national and international IP protection and enforcement projects and advising on complex, high-risk IP legal issues and strategies. She also has experience working with government bodies and educational organisations, as well as entrepreneurial individuals.

Recently named “Intellectual Property Partner of the Year” by Lawyers Weekly, her industry experience and sectoral knowledge is expansive, spanning manufacturing, technology, motor vehicle, telecommunications, renewable energy, mining, agriculture, biotechnology, food and beverage, fashion, beauty and personal care sectors.

Commenting on the appointment, K&L Gates’ Regional Managing Partner, Australia, Jason Opperman said: “We are delighted to welcome Sally to the firm as we continue to pursue growth in areas where we see significant opportunity. Sally’s impressive credentials further bolster our highly successful global IP practice in response to increasing client demand.”

Intellectual Property practice area leader Jonathan Feder further commented: “We are really thrilled to have Sally join the team, she is well respected for being way ahead of the game with a sophisticated understanding of trade mark law and a very thorough and practical approach in her advice. She will be a tremendous asset to the team and to our clients. Sally’s arrival continues our growth strategy in the global IP team, with recent additions in Germany and the US.”

Foreman is the eighth new partner to join the Australian offices of the firm since January 2024. Her arrival closely follows the appointments of Corporate partners Luke Paterson (Perth), Divesh Patel (Sydney), Khilen Devani and Carl Hinze and (Brisbane), Finance partner Claudine Salameh (Sydney), and Real Estate partners Simon Moen (Perth) and Justin O’Callaghan (Brisbane).

K&L Gates’ global IP practice has more than 250 lawyers and professionals – including more than 125 registered patent lawyers, agents, and technology specialists with technical or advanced science degrees, nearly 30 with doctorates – who devote their practices to helping clients establish, enforce, and leverage their intellectual property rights worldwide. K&L Gates’ IP practice filed more than 5,470 patent applications and 4,550 trademarks worldwide in 2023.
