Jones Day expands Mexico City Office with the arrival of Luis Rubio and team

The global law firm Jones Day has announced that four partners, one of counsel, and a team of associates are joining the Firm in its Mexico City Office. Luis Rubio Barnetche joins as a partner in the Government Regulation Practice, together with partners Bertha Alicia Ordaz Avilés and Octavio Lecona Morales. José Antonio Vázquez Cobo joins as a partner in the Global Disputes Practice with Matias Osvaldo Bietti as of counsel. All arrive from the Mexico City office of Greenberg Traurig LLP and bring a team of associates with them.

Luis Rubio Barnetche practices corporate law and represents domestic and international clients on complex corporate matters, M&A, divestitures, joint ventures, international contracts, and international trade proceedings with deep experience in the telecom sector. He pioneered the practice of dispute resolution in Mexico under Chapter XIX of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Mr. Rubio was part of the team that negotiated NAFTA on behalf of the Mexican government, particularly with respect to foreign investment. He also provides advice to major industrial, mobile telephone, and satellite operators in Mexico. Chambers ranks Mr. Rubio as a leading TMT and Corporate/M&A lawyer in Mexico.

Bertha Alicia Ordaz Avilés’ practice focuses on transactional matters in the telecommunications, media, and other regulated sectors. She provides legal advice on M&A, joint ventures, corporate and financial restructuring, as well as general antitrust matters and investigations before the Mexican Federal Competition Commission. Additionally, she has experience leading and implementing compliance programs in both anticorruption and antitrust matters.

Octavio Lecona Morales focuses his practice on telecommunications and corporate law, providing advice to domestic and multinational clients, including Mexico’s second largest mobile provider. He represents clients in M&A, joint ventures, corporate restructuring, and a wide range of general corporate and regulatory matters.

José Antonio Vázquez Cobo is a commercial litigator who represents corporate and individuals in complex proceedings before local and federal courts and arbitration forums. His practice encompasses a variety of litigation areas, such as contractual disputes, civil responsibility, shareholders and managers conflicts, enforcement of negotiable documents and guarantee agreements as well as asset-recovery litigation and judicial probate proceedings.

Matias Osvaldo Bietti has advised clients in numerous international proceedings before the ICSID, Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), and International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), particularly in disputes relating to energy, infrastructure, oil and gas, water and sanitation, sovereign debt, and aviation.
