DLA Piper announced today that Ryan O’Quinn, a former federal prosecutor with extensive defense experience in high-profile white collar cases, has joined the firm’s Litigation practice as a partner in the Miami office.
After advising private equity clients and public issuers early in his career, O’Quinn entered government service where he spent eight years as an enforcement attorney at the US Securities and Exchange Commission and as an economic crimes prosecutor for the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida. In 2011, O’Quinn co-founded a prominent Miami litigation boutique focusing on corporate, securities, healthcare and environmental investigations. He has extensive experience advising clients defending complex parallel proceedings, including complex civil litigation, civil regulatory inquiries and white collar criminal investigations.
“Ryan’s years as a litigator on both sides of the courtroom will strengthen our capabilities in regulatory matters affecting our clients throughout the Southeast and beyond,” said Jim Brogan, co-chair of DLA Piper’s US Litigation practice. “Ryan has a national reputation as a leader in government investigations with a focus on financial services, accounting and the medical industry.”
As a prosecutor, O’Quinn served as lead counsel in several highly publicized cases, including a complex stock manipulation scheme that caused more than $580 million in shareholder losses and a case involving false and misleading sales of $1.7 billion in viatical and life settlements. After re-entering private practice five years ago, O’Quinn has represented companies and executives navigating regulatory and litigation concerns involving the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the Department of Justice, and the Office of Inspector General of the US Department of Health & Human Services.
“The Southeast region of the United States is quickly seeing a substantial shift in the regulatory space for several industries, in particular the financial sector, healthcare and life sciences,” said Joshua Kaye, managing partner of DLA Piper’s Miami office. “With a substantial number of our firm’s healthcare matters originating in this region, Ryan’s outstanding reputation and background in complex regulatory work will be a tremendous boost to our Miami office and clients in Latin America.”
O’Quinn, who is fluent in Spanish, adds to DLA Piper’s growing presence in Miami and its Litigation practice. The recent growth comes on the heels of other high-profile litigators, including partners Jessica Masella and Michael Strapp, in New York and Boston, respectively.
He received his J.D. from Washington and Lee University, and his A.B. from Princeton University.
