Faegre Drinker announced today that John W. Ursu has joined the firm’s Minneapolis office as a partner in the Business Litigation group. Ursu comes to the firm from Greene Espel PLLP, where he practiced for 15 years.
Known for his aggressive, creative and effective approach to high-stakes litigation, Ursu has achieved outstanding results for corporate clients in some of the most challenging jurisdictions in the country. Over the past five years, he has led clients to victories in cases involving more than $5 billion of potential liability and 60,000 plaintiffs, including outright dismissals of third-party complaints in multidistrict litigation and consolidated state litigation, putative class actions, a CAFA-removed mass action, and a consolidated mass-tort state action. Ursu has won on issues of first impression involving the integration of new technology, making new law for the benefit of his clients.
“John’s strong reputation as a strategic thinker and deep experience with big cases and complex litigation make him an exciting addition,” Faegre Drinker co-chairs Thomas C. Froehle, Jr. and Andrew C. Kassner said in a joint statement. “Our firm is ‘Designed for Clients,’ and his record of client service and results dovetails perfectly with that.”
Daniel J. Collins and Deborah A. Ellingboe, co-leaders of Faegre Drinker’s Litigation group, said in a joint statement, “Innovative companies need innovative lawyers, and that is the value John brings to the firm. He has demonstrated vision, leadership and a will to win that will enhance our exceptional international litigation bench. We have known John for many years, and he is an excellent addition to our Minneapolis office.”
Ursu has been named to “Best Lawyers in America” for his national commercial practice. In 2019, he was one of only 18 lawyers nationwide — and the only lawyer in Minnesota — to be named a BTI “Client Service All-Star MVP,” which “honors the individuals able to stand out in the sea of legal services providers to represent the cream of the crop.” He serves on the board of directors of Neighborhood Justice Center, one of Minnesota’s oldest public-defender organizations.
Ursu earned his bachelor’s degree from Kenyon College and a master’s degree from the University of Exeter. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School, where Ursu was both managing editor of the Michigan Law Review and the Campbell Moot Court Champion.
With 250 litigators licensed in key jurisdictions throughout the United States, China and the U.K., Faegre Drinker’s Litigation team provides unparalleled counsel services, comprehensive on-the-ground litigation support and key local court relationships.
