Latham & Watkins To Add Prominent Litigation Partner in Munich

Latham & Watkins LLP is pleased to announce that Thomas Grützner will join the Munich office as a partner in the Litigation & Trial Department. Grützner’s practice focuses on advising corporate and financial institution clients on a variety of complex compliance and white collar crime matters. Grützner joins Latham & Watkins from Baker McKenzie in Munich.

He has particular experience advising clients in adopting compliance management systems and risk mitigation measures, as well as conducting compliance due diligence in connection with M&A transactions, leading internal investigations, and representing clients before government enforcement agencies.

“Building out our disputes capability in Germany is a key strategic priority for the firm,” said Oliver Felsenstein, Managing Partner of Latham & Watkins in Germany. “Thomas’ deep institutional connections and expertise complement our existing client base, and we are excited to welcome him to our growing team.”

“The market for white collar and compliance advice has increased significantly in Germany and across Europe in recent years,” adds Christoph Baus, Local Department Chair of the Litigation & Trial Department in Germany. “Thomas is a talented, hardworking practitioner, who has established an impeccable reputation as a formidable advocate for his clients. Adding Thomas’ capabilities to the practice not only increases our ability to handle more white collar matters in Germany, but his arrival also broadens our footprint and position in Europe to handle a wide range of high stakes white collar matters and investigations.”

“Europe is a key pillar of our global strategy, and we are excited by the opportunities we see to grow our practice on the continent. Thomas is well known for his experience in a wide range of enforcement and compliance matters for blue chip companies, particularly coordinating large matters that reach into multiple jurisdictions. He is one of the market’s leading talents, with an impressive track record, and he will greatly enhance the deep bench of the practice group in Europe and globally,” added Benjamin Naftalis, Global Co-Chair of the White Collar Defense & Investigations Practice.

Grützner graduated from the University of Göttingen in 2000, receiving his doctorate summa cum laude in 2002, and undertook his Referendariat at the Brunswick Court of Appeals. He lectures on white collar and compliance topics at Leibniz- Universität Hannover and Universität Saarland, and serves as a visiting lecturer at Freie Universität Berlin, where he was awarded a professorship in 2018.
