Jeffrey Blumenfeld Joins Lowenstein Sandler to Chair Antitrust Practice

Lowenstein Sandler LLP announced that Jeffrey Blumenfeld has joined the firm as chair of its Antitrust & Trade Regulation practice focusing on antitrust litigation and counseling. He also will be a member of Lowenstein’s Tech Group, a national leader in representing venture-backed technology companies, where he will actively counsel Lowenstein’s clients and their investors on competition issues facing emerging technology companies, particularly at the intersection of antitrust and intellectual property.

“Jeff’s peerless industry knowledge, entrepreneurial drive and commitment to his clients make him an exceptionally strong cultural fit for our firm,” said Gary M. Wingens, Lowenstein Sandler’s chairman and managing partner. “At a time of increasing M&A activity across our transactional teams, we are excited to deepen our experience base in the competition arena. His talent as a litigator and trusted counselor combined with his clear technology bona fides are a real strategic fit, adding greater breadth to our leading Tech Group and greater strength to our Antitrust practice.”

Blumenfeld has counseled companies in every new technology area from the first significant competition battles in telephony, through wireless, broadband, and the Internet. He has been involved in many startup and early stage venture-backed companies as both outside and in-house general counsel, as well as serving as a board member for companies in this industry. Prior to entering private practice, Blumenfeld was an Assistant United States Attorney and also held several positions in the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice, most notably as one of the lead attorneys trying United States v. AT&T (the divestiture case) and in post-divestiture litigation.

Blumenfeld has significant experience litigating and trying a wide variety of complex matters, including civil and criminal antitrust matters, having represented plaintiffs and defendants in monopolization cases, mergers and acquisitions, and criminal price-fixing investigations and trials. He also is an experienced regulatory litigator, and has litigated and tried complex matters involving engineering and technology issues; economic, costing and pricing issues; and competitive conduct issues at the FCC and at state commissions nationwide.

After leaving government, Blumenfeld co-founded the law firm Blumenfeld & Cohen, which provided competition and policy advocacy to technology companies for nearly two decades. Immediately prior to joining Lowenstein Sandler, he was a partner with Crowell & Moring in Washington DC.

“Lowenstein established its national platform by building on its core practices with great lateral hires like Jeff – attorneys who can add new dimensions to our historically strong technology, investment management, bankruptcy and litigation teams. We’ve grown our robust Palo Alto and New York offices with this strategy and we look forward to its continued success as we consider expanding our footprint in new markets,” added Wingens.

While Blumenfeld joins Lowenstein Sandler in its New York office, he will spend considerable time in Washington DC. He will work closely with the firm’s senior management team to explore the potential for Lowenstein Sandler to expand its platform with an office in the nation’s capital, home to the many federal agencies that regulate the firm’s clients.
