Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP announces that David A. Lewis has joined the firm in its Lawyers Professional Responsibility/Risk Management Group. Mr. Lewis will practice in Hinshaw’s New York office.
Peter R. Jarvis, chair of Hinshaw’s Lawyers’ Professional Responsibility/Risk Management Practice Group, said, “David’s addition furthers our group’s already substantial ability to assist our clients on a full range of professional responsibility and risk management matters.” He stated further, “Having David on our team significantly improves our ability to represent clients not only in New York but also nationally and internationally.”

Mr. Lewis was previously General Counsel for, and a partner at, Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman LLP and, before then, worked with the late Steven Krane at Proskauer Rose LLP. In both positions, Mr. Lewis focused his practice on assisting attorneys on legal ethics/professional responsibility and risk management matters. These included but were not limited to attorney-client privilege and client confidentiality issues, bar admission requirements, conflicts of interest, disqualification motions, cross-border legal practice issues, fee disputes, law firm structure, legal advertising regulations and permissible versus impermissible conduct in litigation and business matters. Additionally, Mr. Lewis serves, pro bono, as an advocate for children’s rights on behalf of the Legal Aid Society.
Mr. Lewis serves on several prominent committees throughout the state of New York that address legal ethics. These include: (1) the New York State Bar Association’s Committee on Standards of Attorney Conduct, which studies and recommends changes in the rules of professional conduct that govern lawyers in New York; (2) the New York City Bar Association’s (NYCBA’s) Professional Responsibility Committee, for which he serves as Chairman; and (3) the New York County Lawyers’ Association’s Board of Advisors for the Ethics Institute, and the association’s Task Force on Professionalism. Mr. Lewis also served on the NYCBA’s Committee on Professional and Judicial Ethics from 2007-2010.
Mr. Lewis earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 2001, and his B.A. from Colgate University in 1998.
