Cadwalader Expands Capital Markets Practice with Addition of New York Partner Chris Gavin

Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP, a leading counselor to global financial institutions and corporations, today announced that Chris Gavin joined the firm as a partner in the Capital Markets Group in New York. His practice focuses on U.S. and international structured finance transactions covering consumer and corporate debt , including residential mortgage loans.

“The addition of Chris represents the continued growth of our asset-backed securities practice through investment in experienced partners with a strong market presence and client relationships,” said Patrick Quinn, Managing Partner of Cadwalader. “Our strategy is to build on our core strengths, such as our preeminent securitization practice, as we seek to further expand our ABS practice in the U.S.”

Gavin is consistently recognized by industry publications and independent commentators, such as IFLR 1000, as a leading securitization and structured finance lawyer. He has been repeatedly honored by the Financial Times in its annual “Innovative Lawyer” feature and is a member of the Structured Finance Industry Group, the securitization industry’s unifying forum.

“Chris deepens our global ABS bench and complements the firm’s growing practice in the U.S.,” said Michael Gambro, Partner and Co-Chair of the firm’s Capital Markets Group with Stuart Goldstein. “Additionally, we expect him to play a vital role serving clients as the non-agency residential mortgage-backed securities market revives.”

In addition to his residential mortgage market expertise, Gavin has significant experience securitizing and financing many other types of assets and projects, including auto loans and leases, unsecured consumer loans, fix and flip residential loans, commercial mortgage loans, home equity lines of credit, franchise loans, mortgage servicing rights, corporate loans, repo obligations, toll road projects, lower and middle income residential projects, payroll deduction loans and marketplace loans/peer-to-peer loans in the U.S. and various international markets, including Latin America, Africa, Europe and Australia.

“Cadwalader’s platform is the perfect match for my practice and will allow me to best serve my clients, including meeting their demands for trans-Atlantic structured finance counsel with strong teams in both the U.S. and in London,” Gavin said. “I’m excited to join the industry-leading firm, as well as to have the opportunity to work with many of my former colleagues once again.”

Gavin joins five of his former Mayer Brown partners now at Cadwalader, including Bruce Bloomingdale in New York, as well as Stephen Day and Jeremiah Wagner in London, and Michael Mascia and Wesley Misson in Charlotte who were two of the 11 lateral partners Cadwalader added in 2015.

The firm’s Capital Markets Group, led by partners Michael Gambro and Stuart Goldstein, is a leading global securitization practice which handles a broad range of public and private securitization and structured finance transactions, including CMBS, CLOs, ABS and other complex securitization and structured finance transactions. Cadwalader also structures and executes offerings of securities backed by the full range of asset classes, including auto loans and leases, bank loans, credit cards, aircraft and equipment leases, manufactured housing contracts, trade receivables, marketplace loans (and other FinTech transactions), insurance and insurance-linked assets, solar assets, music and stadium royalties, franchise, government and health care receivables, swap receivables, whole business securitization, and other non-traditional assets.
