Greenberg Traurig Adds Thomas Pease, Renowned Intellectual Property and Patent Litigation Attorney

Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP expands its growing global Intellectual Property (IP) Litigation Practice with the addition of Thomas D. Pease as a shareholder in New York. Pease, who has a focus on Patent Litigation, joins from Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP, where he was a leader in the IP Practice.

Pease has served as lead trial counsel in significant patent and trade secret cases across a wide range of industries, including cellular telecommunications, Wi-Fi, semi-conductors, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), cryptocurrency/blockchain/DeFi, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals.

“We are thrilled to add a senior superstar IP and patent trial lawyer like Tom to our group. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in a variety of high technology industries which will greatly benefit our growing client roster nationwide and around the world,” said Scott J. Bornstein, co-managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s New York office, co-chair of the firm’s Global Intellectual Property & Technology Practice, and co-chair of the firm’s Global Patent Litigation Group.

Pease has deep experience in standard essential patents (SEPs) and has represented net licensors, net licensees, and companies that straddle the line between them in virtually every kind of patent dispute. His work covers the RAND/FRAND licensing commitments that often govern SEPs, including district court and International Trade Commission litigation, arbitration, investigations before the FTC, DOJ, and EU’s DG Comp., license negotiations, and the design and implementation of worldwide litigation strategies.

“We are thrilled a renowned litigator like Tom is joining the firm. He brings years of experience working with many of the same clients the firm represents and is held in the highest regard,” said Richard A. Edlin, Greenberg Traurig vice chair and chair of the New York Litigation Practice. “His addition is part of our strategic goal of enhancing our leading litigation practice.”

Pease has designed and implemented patent monetization programs, designed and challenged patent pools, and drafted and negotiated licenses for clients ranging from startups to Fortune 50 companies. He also has deep relationships with litigation funders. Outside of IP, Tom has litigated cases involving the intersection of antitrust and IP law as well as those involving the financial services industry.

“I was attracted to the growing strength and outstanding reputation of Greenberg Traurig’s IP litigation practice and the premier clients they represent, many of which I have also worked with throughout my career. GT’s focus on providing better efficiency and value for clients, by being at the forefront of investigating and utilizing technologies, as well as by offering location-competitive rates across its many markets and a range of alternative fee arrangements, is also very attractive. I look forward to collaborating with the firm’s talented attorneys, helping to expand the practice, and tapping into the breadth and depth of resources at this global powerhouse,” Pease said.

Pease also shares his specialized industry knowledge outside of the office with frequent speaking engagements on IP monetization, trade secrets, and RAND.
