Greenberg Traurig Continues to Grow Pharmaceutical, Medical Device & Health Care Litigation Practice with Addition of Carla R. Karp

Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP has further expanded its award-winning Pharmaceutical, Medical Device & Health Care Litigation and Products Liability Litigation practices with the addition of Carla R. Karp as a shareholder in the firm’s New Jersey office. Karp joins Greenberg Traurig from Goodwin Procter LLP, following Glenn S. Kerner and Nilda M. Isidro to the firm, who are former partners of Goodwin Procter. They joined as Pharmaceutical, Medical Device & Health Care Litigation and Products Liability Litigation practice shareholders in the firm’s New York office in November 2021.

Karp, who has in-depth experience representing defendants in complex products liability cases, will focus her practice at Greenberg Traurig on pharmaceutical, medical device, and consumer products litigation, including mass torts and multi-district litigation. She has significant experience defending pharmaceutical manufacturers and medical device manufacturers in mass torts and coordinated proceedings, as well as individual cases and appeals, in both state and federal courts nationwide.

“We are delighted to welcome Carla, a highly skilled attorney with whom we have enjoyed working on several matters as defense co-counsel,” said Lori G. Cohen vice chair of Greenberg Traurig, co-chair of the firm’s global Litigation Practice, co-chair of the Trial Practice, and founder of the Pharmaceutical, Medical Device & Health Care Litigation Practice at the firm. “Her commitment to client excellence perfectly mirrors that of our team, whose successful results for clients are consistently impressive.”

At her former firm, Karp worked with Kerner and Isidro in their capacity as national counsel for Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc., where they supervised local counsel and coordinated the national litigation strategy for the generic pharmaceutical industry leader. In addition, she worked with them in their representation of Smith & Nephew, Inc. and Zoll Medical Corporation, among others.

“I am excited to welcome an exceptional legal talent like Carla, reaffirming Greenberg Traurig’s unique ability to serve clients at the highest level both locally and worldwide,” said David Jay, managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s New Jersey office. “Carla will undoubtedly be a tremendous asset to our New Jersey office and our national litigation team.”

For the past several years, Karp, Kerner, Isidro, and a Greenberg Traurig team jointly led the legal defense group in a coordinated California proceeding against 12 different manufacturers of Amiodarone, a medication used to treat certain types of serious, irregular heartbeat. Together, they obtained the dismissal of 460+ non-California plaintiffs in 2019 – a decision that was upheld on appeal in 2020. They subsequently obtained the dismissal of the remaining 28 California plaintiffs in 2020, a decision that is now on appeal.

“Having had the opportunity to work with Lori Cohen, a litigator of profound stature, and her extraordinary team, I am now thrilled to join with them at the same firm,” Karp said. “The resources available to our team – including Greenberg Traurig’s renowned global platform of collaborative attorney talent – are unparalleled, and I look forward to achieving many important victories for clients together.”

Karp received a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law and a B.A., summa cum laude, from Fairfield University.
