The global law firm Jones Day has announced that commercial litigator James (Jim) Sottile has joined the Firm’s Business & Tort Litigation Practice as a partner in its New York Office.
An experienced courtroom lawyer who has tried more than 30 cases to decision, Mr. Sottile’s practice focuses on commercial litigation with particular emphasis on complex bankruptcy matters. His cases have involved fraudulent conveyances, alter ego/veil piercing, insurance coverage, securities fraud, and professional malpractice.
“Jim has proven himself, time and time again, to be a staunch advocate for his clients’ interests and a strong, energetic litigator in the courtroom,” said Stephanie Parker, co-leader of the Firm’s Business & Tort Litigation Practice. “He’s litigated in bankruptcy matters, defended settlements, and advised clients with respect to government agency investigations. He will be a valuable addition to an already formidable practice.”
Mr. Sottile’s recent client work includes the representation of the principals of a major nursing home business, where he defeated claims seeking to hold them liable for more than $1 billion in tort judgments. Also, as lead trial counsel for the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors in the Tribune Company competing plan proceedings, he successfully defended a settlement of multi-billion dollar fraudulent conveyance claims. In addition, he has obtained a preliminary injunction requiring a hedge fund’s directors and officers insurer to continue advancing defense costs in parallel criminal and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) matters.
Beyond his trial work, Mr. Sottile has represented clients under investigation by the SEC and other financial regulators, including the New York Department of Financial Services. In particular, he has represented the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in connection with several governmental investigations.
