Julia Boyd Joins Reed Smith’s Global Corporate Group In New York

Global law firm Reed Smith today announced the addition of Julia Boyd as a partner in its Global Corporate Group in New York. She was formerly a member of the Private Equity Group at Goodwin Procter, which she joined in 2013.

“Julia is an exceptional lawyer with extensive M&A and private equity experience that will further bolster our capabilities in New York,” said Matthew J. Petersen, co-chair of Reed Smith’s Global Corporate Group. He further added, “Her extensive experience in the life sciences and health care sectors are a great fit with our Life Sciences Health Care Industry Group at a time when we are seeing significant consolidation in that sector.”

Boyd represents private equity funds, venture capital funds and portfolio companies in their corporate transactions, including international and domestic mergers, asset and stock acquisitions, leveraged buyouts, growth equity investments, bolt-ons, and joint ventures. She also represents companies with governance matters and other general corporate and commercial matters. In addition, she has advised clients in a broad range of industries including health care, technology, education, financial services, entertainment, consumer goods, manufacturing, and general industrials.

“In addition to its exceptional transactional practice and global platform, Reed Smith’s deep industry expertise in many sectors, including health care, technology, energy, financial services, media, and entertainment, is quite unparalleled,” said Boyd. “I am also looking forward to actively participating in the firm’s Women’s Initiative Network (WINRS) and in mentoring associates.”

A graduate of the University of Toronto and Durham University Law School, Boyd is one of the three founders of SWIPE (Senior Women in Private Equity), a networking organization launched in 2017 that hosts monthly events for senior female investment professionals to discuss deal flow and co-investment and capital raising opportunities. In its first year, SWIPE’s membership has surged to more than 300 members who hold top positions at investment funds in New York.

Prior to joining Goodwin, Boyd practiced at Day Pitney from 2010 to 2013, and at Graubard Miller from 2007 to 2010.

“Julia’s arrival is very well-timed, coinciding with an uptick in both M&A and private equity activity,” said Cindy Schmitt Minniti, Managing Partner of Reed Smith’s New York office. “Her work is already known to and respected by our attorneys, and we are pleased to welcome her to the firm.”

Boyd is the second addition to Reed Smith’s Corporate Group in the past month. In August, Moshe J. Kupietzky, former head of Sidley Austin’s Los Angeles Corporate and Finance Group for more than 20 years and former Managing Partner of Sidley’s LA office, added his extensive M&A and finance experience to the firm’s Century City office. Reed Smith’s Global Corporate Group is a full-service practice of more than 300 lawyers.
