Akin Gump today announced that Brian T. Daly, a leading advisor to hedge fund managers and private equity fund sponsors, has joined the firm as a partner in its investment management practice in New York. Mr. Daly comes to Akin Gump from Schulte Roth & Zabel, where he was a partner.
Mr. Daly maintains a market-leading practice advising private investment funds on legal, compliance and operational programs, both in the U.S. and Asian markets. His substantial hedge fund industry experience includes more than two decades in private practice and in-house roles for prominent private fund managers.
“Brian is a superb addition to our top-flight investment management group,” said Akin Gump chairperson Kim Koopersmith. “His arrival strengthens our capabilities in the domestic hedge fund market as well as our ties to the Asian markets, bringing together the clout of our funds, corporate/M&A and regulatory teams in Asia and Europe with those in the United States. Brian further solidifies Akin Gump’s standing as the home of a leading global hedge fund practice, and I am excited to welcome him to the firm.”
Having spent nearly a decade in-house as general counsel and chief compliance officer of several prominent investment management firms, Mr. Daly is well versed in the wide range of legal and business challenges facing investment advisors, commodity pool operators and commodity trading advisors.
As a core part of his practice, Mr. Daly advises private funds on compliance matters in both advisory and contentious regulatory matters, representing clients before the full suite of government agencies with oversight over the funds industry. His practice includes counseling hedge, private equity and real estate fund managers on policies and procedures, examinations and enforcement matters, fund and management company formation, operational and trading issues, and management company transactions.
“Amid the growing complexity of the funds industry, which includes increasing layers of regulatory and compliance responsibilities for fund managers, Brian is a true leader and a perfect fit for us and our clients,” said Prakash Mehta, co-head of Akin Gump’s investment management practice. “With years of experience in both private practice and in-house roles, Brian will be an integral part of our team during what is shaping up to be a period of rapid growth in the hedge funds market following years of consolidation.”
Mr. Daly added, “With a strong global platform—particularly in Asia—and a sterling reputation throughout the funds industry, Akin Gump is a perfect fit for my practice as I look to expand my fund formation and regulatory work. The synergies between my practice and the firm’s global funds platform and its depth of experience in areas such as M&A and regulatory will also be greatly beneficial for my clients.”
