Leading project finance team joins DLA Piper in Washington, DC and New York

DLA Piper announced today that Timothy Moran, Vanessa Richelle Wilson, and Philip Corsello have joined the firm’s Finance practice as partners. Mr. Moran will be based in DLA Piper’s Washington, D.C. and London offices. Ms. Wilson will reside in DLA Piper’s Washington, DC office, while Mr. Corsello will be based in New York. Mr. Moran was the co-head of Sidley Austin’s Project Finance practice.

The group’s arrival follows on the heels of Gregory Smith, the former head of Allen & Overy’s US Agency practice, who joined the firm as a partner in January. Similar to Mr. Smith, each lawyer focuses on energy M&A, infrastructure development and finance, and project development and financing matters around the world, and are part of a strategic initiative by DLA Piper to expand its offerings as one of the top global law firms in these sectors. In addition, earlier this year Charles Carroll, most recently General Counsel of renewable energy company Terra-Gen Power and formerly a partner at Dewey & LeBoeuf, and Richard Casey, the former General Counsel of wind power company Nordex USA, also joined the firm’s energy and projects group.

“The addition of Tim and his team, in tandem with Greg’s arrival, reinforces the firm as a major player in the project finance space both domestically and abroad,” said Jeffery Steiner, global co-chair of DLA Piper’s Finance practice. “Leveraging our global footprint and internal resources, we know that Tim, with the support of Phil and Vanessa, will enhance our domestic and international finance capabilities and take DLA Piper to a new level of client service within the Project Finance and Renewables sectors.”

Mr. Moran represents domestic and international lenders, private equity firms, and project sponsors that are active in the energy and infrastructure sectors. While possessing more than 20 years of experience in thermal power and the midstream oil and gas sectors, he has a particular focus on renewable energy. Mr. Moran has represented clients in the development and/or financing of renewable energy projects with an aggregate value in excess of US$30 billion. His clients include the world’s leading participants in the development and financing of onshore wind, offshore wind, solar, geothermal and battery storage facilities. He also has a long history of representing lenders and institutional investors in connection with construction and term-loan financings, private placements, letter of credit facilities, and intercreditor arrangements. These representations span nearly all sectors of infrastructure development and finance – from stadiums and arenas in the US to thermal powered generation facilities in Africa. In addition, he has represented clients in connection with the acquisition or sale of nearly 200 projects within the power generation and midstream oil and gas sectors.

Ms. Wilson and Mr. Corsello also represent sponsors, lenders, private equity and institutional investors in project financings, M&A, tax equity and capital markets matters. Mr. Corsello and Mr. Moran have worked together for more than 25 years. Ms. Wilson and Mr. Moran have worked together for nearly 20 years.

All three lawyers join DLA Piper from Sidley Austin. Earlier in their careers, the group worked at Dewey & LeBouef with Mr. Smith and Joseph Tato, global co-chair of DLA Piper’s Energy sector and US chair of its Projects and Infrastructure practice.

“I know first-hand that Tim, Vanessa, and Phil are each exceptionally talented lawyers in their own right,” said Tato. “Together, the experience and skills of this group will provide our clients with experienced counsel when dealing with the complex, large scale projects currently underway in North America, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. Combined with Greg Smith, among other recent hires, we have re-assembled the world’s leading project and infrastructure team.”

“The addition of this premier group reinforces the firm’s larger strategy to enhance its experience, depth and global reputation in infrastructure, energy and finance,” added Roger Meltzer, global co-chair and co-chair of the Americas for DLA Piper. “It will also enable us to further build out a robust infrastructure and projects practice, which will benefit our entire global platform.”

Mr. Moran earned his J.D. and B.A. from the University of Virginia. Ms. Wilson earned her J.D. from Tulane Law School and her B.A. from the University of New Orleans. Mr. Corsello earned his J.D. from Fordham University School of Law and his B.A. from Columbia College.
