A two-time Advisen “Cyber Law Firm of the Year” winner, Lewis Brisbois’ Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice has hired attorney Sarah Rugnetta, previously the Health Law Practice lead at Beckage, to play a key role in developing its compliance advisory services. Ms. Rugnetta will join a team of over 55 attorneys, over 70% of whom are female, which is becoming as well known for its diversity as it is for its data privacy and cybersecurity services.
A former privacy officer and regulator, Ms. Rugnetta has worked in health law, regulatory compliance, risk management, and data privacy and security for over 15 years. She advises a wide spectrum of clients on health law compliance, and data privacy and security matters, including hospitals and healthcare providers, insurers, municipalities and other government entities, corporations, law firms, foundations, and not-for-profit entities. She works closely with healthcare and insurance clients to develop compliance programs, prepare for potential threats, and respond to privacy and security incidents. A former Assistant General Counsel with the Vermont Department of Financial Regulation, Ms. Rugnetta regularly interfaces with state and federal agencies in response to investigations, enforcement actions, and compliance audits. She also served as a Program and Policy Advisor for the U.S. Agency for International Development in New Delhi, India, where she advised on health and gender programs, and facilitated intra-agency communication, outreach and interagency coordination.
“We couldn’t be more excited to have Sarah join our team,” Practice Chair Sean B. Hoar said. “Her experience and expertise in developing compliance programs and providing compliance services will be a tremendous benefit for our clients. She will also play a key role in developing our compliance advisory practice and mentoring a number of her new teammates.”
Practice Co-Chair Alyssa R. Watzman echoed Mr. Hoar’s excitement. “Sarah is an accomplished professional in the privacy compliance space and brings substantial experience and unique skillsets to bolster our compliance services offerings,” said Ms. Watzman. “She will play a significant role in continuing to establish our team as the premier national data privacy and security team.”
In assessing her new role, Ms. Rugnetta said, “I am thrilled to join the Lewis Brisbois team to continue to expand its premier compliance advisory practice. It is a compelling opportunity to work within such a unique team culture alongside such talented teammates.”
Ms. Rugnetta obtained her law degree from the University of Buffalo Law School, cum laude, and her Bachelor of Arts from St. Lawrence University, cum laude. She is licensed to practice in New York and Vermont and will be affiliated with Lewis Brisbois’ New York office.
