Patrick “Rick” Cox, an attorney focusing on various tax aspects facing domestic and international companies, has joined Nixon Peabody’s New York office as a partner in the firm’s M&A and Corporate Transactions practice. Rick comes to Nixon Peabody from Baker McKenzie, where he was a partner.
Rick focuses his practice on developing tax strategies for complex cross-border and domestic business transactions, representing local and international firms, investors, and financial intermediaries in federal income tax matters related to capital market transactions and M&A. Rick has also represented family offices, private equity funds and high-net-worth individuals.

Rick advises clients on inbound and outbound tax issues relating to investments in securities, banking and finance, IP rationalizations, and tax treaty planning. In real estate, Rick advises clients on the benefits of qualified opportunity zones, REITs and other structures in investment towards real property in the U.S. He also counsels clients on creditor tax issues, such as debt offerings, exchanges, and reorganizations, including bankruptcy.

Outside his practice, Rick is heavily involved with the New York State Bar Association, where he is a member of the Bankruptcy and Operating Losses, Inbound U.S. Activities of Foreign Taxpayers, Outbound U.S. Activities of Foreign Taxpayers, and Cross-Border Capital Markets committees. Rick is also active in pro bono work, assisting clients in obtaining tax-exempt status for U.S. federal income tax purposes and advising foreign charitable organizations on their activities in the U.S.
He attended New York University School of Law, Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University, and Pepperdine University School of Law. Rick earned his Bachelor of Arts at the University of California, Berkeley.
