Global law firm Shearman & Sterling today announces Mark Shapiro will rejoin the firm as a partner, Chairman of the Financial Restructuring & Insolvency group in New York and a member of the Firm’s Executive Committee. Most recently, Mark was a Managing Director and the Head of Restructuring at global hedge fund PointState Capital LP.
A former partner and co-head of the Firm’s restructuring and bankruptcy group, Mark has worked as an investment professional at a large hedge fund, investment banker and lawyer on some of the largest and most complex in-court and out of court restructurings, including investments, financings and distressed acquisitions in the U.S. and globally and is recognized as one of the leading professionals in the insolvency area. Following his departure from Shearman & Sterling, Mark served as the Head of Restructuring at two global investment banks, including Lehman Brothers, where he guided the sale of its U.S. assets in Chapter 11 in 2008.
“We are very excited to welcome Mark back to the Firm and benefit from his extraordinary industry knowledge, unique skillset and extensive network, which will further bolster our existing Financial Restructuring & Insolvency team in the U.S. and London,” said David Beveridge, Senior Partner at Shearman & Sterling. “Mark re-joining us will be a major asset to our clients, and there are clear synergies with our Leveraged Finance practice group and our Private Client, Litigation, M&A, and Tax offerings. Following several strategic hires in the last few months, Mark’s appointment further illustrates our long-term commitment to enhancing our business mix by growing key practices and reinforcing our position as a global elite law firm.”
“Having worked with Mark for many years, clients understand that he brings deep and broad experience to any stressed and distressed situation given his prior roles as an investor, investment banker and lawyer,” said Joel Moss and Luckey McDowell, Co-heads of the Financial Restructuring & Insolvency Team. “We look forward to working closely with Mark to continue to build our practice and team in New York and London and help our clients navigate their challenges.”
“I am thrilled to be back at Shearman & Sterling where I started my career and have had the pleasure of working with some of the most talented, driven and hardworking professionals in the industry,” added Mark Shapiro. “I look forward to reuniting with many of my former colleagues and making a valuable contribution to the Firm’s exceptional global platform.”
