Steptoe & Johnson LLP is pleased to announce that Jim Brochin has joined the firm’s pre-eminent white-collar criminal defense practice as a partner. He will reside in the firm’s New York office.
Brochin focuses his practice on white-collar defense, FCPA, government regulatory matters, internal investigations and complex civil litigation. He has a particular focus on representing clients in the financial services industry. Brochin has represented both corporations and their executives in a wide variety of government investigations, including high-profile investigations by the Department of Justice, the New York attorney general’s office and the Securities and Exchange Commission. He also has significant experience with the New York Department of Financial Services. Brochin’s work over the past several years has included a number of cross-border investigations for major multinational corporations as well as a variety of complex civil matters in areas ranging from securities fraud and shareholder derivative suits to ERISA and antitrust.
Along with his many years of private practice experience, Brochin brings prosecutorial experience having served as an associate independent counsel in the investigation of former Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy.

Steptoe’s white-collar criminal defense practice has represented some of the largest public and private companies in the world in major government and internal investigations. The team represented Volkswagen AG in the Department of Justice’s diesel emissions case and successfully negotiated the largest corporate criminal and regulatory settlement in recent history.
Regarded as one of the best white-collar practices in the United States, the team has garnered many accolades, including recognition by both Chambers USA and The Legal 500 as a top-ranked practice in this field. The group was also named The National Law Journal’s “Washington Litigation Department of the Year in White-Collar Crime” in 2014, 2017, and 2018, and has received Law360’s “Practice Group of the Year in White-Collar” award three times. For the past three years, Global Investigations Review has named Steptoe to its GIR 30, an independent guide to the world’s best firms for international investigations.

Brochin has done significant pro bono work for the Innocence Project, where he serves on the lawyers advisory committee and has co-authored briefs addressing the law concerning eyewitness identification evidence in courts throughout the country, including one the Second Circuit labelled “outstanding.”
Brochin received his B.A. and J.D. from Yale University. He clerked for the Honorable Kimba M. Wood of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
