Gowling WLG is delighted to welcome John Peters as a partner in its Employment, Labour and Equalities Group. Prior to joining the firm, John spent more than two decades at Export Development Canada (EDC), where he served as principal litigation counsel.
Based in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office, John comes to the firm with extensive experience across all areas of employment law – with particular strength helping employers navigate the termination process and severance obligations, as well as conduct workplace investigations. His practice encompasses a range of industry sectors, with a unique emphasis on federal undertakings.
While at EDC, Mr. Peters was responsible for leading EDC’s Litigation Management Team and advising the corporation’s executive team, board of directors, and human resources department on all litigation and potential litigation matters. Over the course of his tenure, he served as lead counsel on an array of complex employment, access to information, and privacy files.
“An accomplished litigator, John is strongly equipped to help our clients manage risk and overcome significant employment obstacles on their paths to success,” said Wayne Warren, managing partner of Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office. “His extensive public sector experience, in particular, makes him a valuable addition to our firm’s growing employment law practice.”
John complements his practice by delivering legal training and awareness building sessions for professionals in all areas of labour and employment law – for both private and public sector employers. He also remains active with Ottawa’s Shepherds of Good Hope, having served on its board of directors since 1993 in a number of roles including chair, vice chair and chair of the human resources committee.
