Global law firm K&L Gates LLP continues to bolster its leading intellectual property litigation practice with the addition of Brian Ankenbrandt as a partner in the Palo Alto office. He joins K&L Gates from Paul Hastings LLP in a move that reunites him with fellow IP trial lawyer Jeff Randall, whose addition to K&L Gates was announced earlier this month. Ankenbrandt began practicing with Randall nearly two decades ago, and together, they have represented many of the world’s most successful and recognizable technology companies as well as numerous other industry-leading enterprises.
“It is a pleasure to welcome Brian to our firm,” stated Michael E. Zeliger, Administrative Partner of K&L Gates’ Palo Alto office. “Along with our other recent hire Jeff Randall, Brian has had great success representing some of the world’s most well-known technology companies on highly complex and important IP litigation matters. The additions of Jeff and now Brian will greatly benefit our clients not only here in the Silicon Valley but also across the U.S. and around the world.”
Focusing his practice on patent and other complex litigation, Ankenbrandt represents clients based in and outside the Silicon Valley in all phases of cases in federal and state courts throughout the U.S. His patent litigation work has involved a variety of technologies, such as computer hardware, software, networks, and databases; telecommunications systems; automated and semiconductor manufacturing systems; memory/storage devices; consumer electronics; mobile and Internet browsers, business methods and payment systems; and audio and video signal recognition.
Ankenbrandt’s work includes assisting Randall, for example, on behalf of eBay in the case that culminated in the unanimous U.S. Supreme Court decision in eBay adv. MercExchange that changed the standard for obtaining injunctive relief in patent cases. He also handles a variety of other complex litigation matters, including claims involving trade secret misappropriation, unfair competition, breach of contract, indemnity, and fraud.
“K&L Gates provides an unrivaled combination of quality, value, and breadth of legal capabilities in an extensive global platform,” said Ankenbrandt. “I’m excited to join the firm’s outstanding team of technology litigators and lawyers in other disciplines to help our clients succeed in the ever-changing IP landscape.”
K&L Gates’ intellectual property litigation practice serves clients around the world, protecting critical fundamental client assets, iconic brands, and proprietary information, as well as emerging technologies such as novel drug therapies and cloud services. With more than 100 IP litigators on four continents devoted to patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret litigation, the group handles every scale of dispute, from large, complex multi-jurisdiction matters and bet-your-company confrontations between industry leaders, to litigation involving non-practicing entities, to modest license dispute and piracy matters.
