Alexis Werl Joins Eversheds Sutherland as a Partner, Re-Launching the Corporate Criminal Law and Investigations Practice in Paris

Eversheds Sutherland is pleased to announce that Alexis Werl, a partner in the criminal law and investigations practice, and Jonathan Trèves, a counsel, have joined the firm’s litigation and arbitration practice. The duo come to Eversheds from McDermott, Will & Emery in Paris.

Their arrivals strengthen its litigation practice, Eversheds Sutherland’s flagship capability, in France and internationally.

Alexis Werl will lead the criminal business law, internal investigations and compliance practice within the litigation and Arbitration group. Together with Jonathan Trèves, he joins a team of some twenty lawyers, including four partners in arbitration and two in business and criminal litigation, which is set to continue to grow in the near future.

Alexis and Jonathan act in all areas of criminal business law, including defence, but also in multi-jurisdictional investigations, as well as in risk prevention and anti-corruption compliance.

Their clients include investment funds, executives and public figures, in various sectors of activity (banking, finance, energy, industry, cosmetics, tech).

Against the backdrop of increasing globalisation of criminal issues, particularly as a result of the proliferation of extraterritorial legislation and increased cooperation between prosecuting authorities, the breadth of Eversheds Sutherland’s international network, with 74 offices in 35 countries, and the quality and strength of its corporate crime and investigation practice, are major assets in providing a coordinated and effective response for the benefit of the firm’s clients.

Alexis and Jonathan will draw on and help develop Eversheds Sutherland’s local and international networks as well as the firm’s various capabilities in order to fully meet the needs of its clients.

Alexis will also continue his practice in corporate litigation (shareholder disputes, dismissal of directors, post-acquisition disputes), which he believes complements his main activity in corporate criminal law.

“We are delighted to be joining a dynamic firm, recognised for the strength and breadth of its international network, as well as for the quality of its litigation practice, which is at the heart of its identity, culture and strategy. I intend to contribute to the development of a real task force in corporate criminal law, investigations and compliance, both locally and internationally. On a more personal note, I am also looking forward to working with talented colleagues, some of whom I already have the pleasure of knowing and who have built wonderful reputations within the market”, says partner Alexis Werl.

“We are delighted to welcome Alexis, whose international background and team spirit are perfectly suited to the increasing demands of the market in the field of criminal business litigation, particularly in cross-border investigations. We are confident that he will be a successful addition to our international and Paris-based teams”, adds Remi Kleiman, Senior Office Partner of Eversheds Sutherland in Paris.

“We look forward to working with Alexis, whose cross-border expertise will enable us to provide a comprehensive and integrated white collar crime offering across the firm’s international footprint,” says Zia Ullah, Head of Corporate Crime and Investigations.
