Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney announces the addition of Michael J. Engle, shareholder and Ashley E. Shapiro, counsel, to the firm’s Philadelphia office. Engle is also named the firm’s chair of the White Collar Defense, Compliance & Investigations practice group. The duo comes to the firm after previously practicing in the Philadelphia office of Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young, LLP.
The pair bring with them decades of trial, white collar criminal defense, internal investigations and corporate compliance experience, further boosting Buchanan’s nationally renowned litigation reputation. Both primarily serve clients in the healthcare, education, finance, environmental and energy industries. Engle and Shapiro are the latest in a string of white collar, compliance and investigations hires, including John P. Cunningham, shareholder, in Washington, D.C. and Adam M. Saltzman, counsel, in Philadelphia.
Engle, a fellow with the American College of Trial Lawyers, represents clients in state and federal criminal cases, complex white collar defense matters, internal or parallel investigations, as well as select civil litigation matters typically involving the defense of qui tam/False Claims Act complaints. He also assists companies and organizations with audits of compliance programs related to matters involving Anti-Money Laundering, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and many other related laws and regulations. In addition, he has extensive experience with Antitrust, environmental and healthcare litigation matters.
Shapiro focuses her practice on white collar criminal defense, internal investigations and corporate compliance matters in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York and frequently conducts regulatory investigations and defends clients in grand jury proceedings. She also has experience in administrative proceedings such as Title IX investigations and the collegiate student conduct process. Shapiro is an accomplished trial advocate with experience in multiple jurisdictions, and has presented numerous appeals to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
“Mike is a well-known player in the white collar defense community and is recognized for his trial and investigation skills. We are thrilled to welcome him as the new chair of the White Collar Defense, Compliance & Investigations group,” said David L. Gordon, co-chair of the firm’s Litigation section. “Mike and Ashley’s skills and experience perfectly intersect with our four core industries of energy, life sciences, healthcare and finance, and will be of great assistance to our clients navigating a complex and changing regulatory landscape.”
“The opportunity to join a law firm with Buchanan’s reputation and national presence is simply too exciting to pass up. It is also an honor to join the firm as the new chair of its White Collar Defense, Compliance & Investigations group, which includes some of the best white collar lawyers around,” said Engle. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to practice law with a group of extremely talented lawyers across so many practice areas in a platform that naturally fosters collaboration – an opportunity made even better by the fact that I get to do this with my friend and colleague, Ashley Shapiro, who has been with me on our fantastic professional journey since we first met in 2014.”
“We welcome Mike and Ashley to our firm and know they will be a great fit for the Philadelphia office. We are excited for them to join our growth story as we open new doors for their clients and strategically expand our existing white collar platform,” said Marc Tepper, shareholder and head of the Philadelphia office.
“I’m enthusiastic about being able to continue to grow my practice on Buchanan’s national platform and collaborate with attorneys across various practice groups and markets, especially Florida,” added Shapiro.
