Peter D. Hardy—a prominent white collar defense attorney known for his work representing corporations and individuals facing potential criminal tax issues—has joined Ballard Spahr as a partner in the Philadelphia office, firm Chair Mark Stewart announced today.
Mr. Hardy advises and defends corporations and management in a range of industries against allegations of misconduct—including tax fraud, financial crimes, money laundering, mortgage fraud and lending law violations, securities fraud, health care fraud, and public corruption. He oversees internal investigations, counsels clients on disclosures to the IRS, and has litigated complex criminal matters at the trial and appellate levels.
“With his background as a federal prosecutor and his standing in the area of criminal tax law, Peter is an important and welcome addition to our white collar practice,” Mr. Stewart said. “He will be a tremendous colleague to all of us and a valuable resource for our clients.”
In addition to his significant private practice experience, Mr. Hardy spent more than a decade as a federal prosecutor. He served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Philadelphia, where he focused on fraud and tax cases. He also served as a trial attorney in the Department of Justice’s Tax Division in Washington, D.C., where he helped write the DOJ Criminal Tax Manual.
Mr. Hardy also wrote the national treatise Criminal Tax, Money Laundering, and Bank Secrecy Act Litigation, published by Bloomberg BNA. He is co-chair of the Monetary Violations and Forfeitures Sub-Committee of the American Bar Association Tax Section’s Civil and Criminal Penalties Committee and he is a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel.

Mr. Hardy’s arrival is the third significant addition to the practice this year. Edward J. McAndrew—a former federal cybercrime prosecutor—joined the firm as a partner in Philadelphia, Delaware, and Washington, D.C. In addition, Brian K. Fitzpatrick, who led national cases involving public corruption and money laundering as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney at the FBI, joined the firm as of counsel in Philadelphia.
