Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP is pleased to announce that Karen Baillie has joined the firm’s Pittsburgh office as partner. Ms. Baillie is a member of the firm’s Litigation Department, as well as the Higher Education and Labor & Employment practice groups.
“We are very excited to have Karen joining Schnader here in Pittsburgh,” said Office Managing Partner George McGrann. “Her keen legal acumen and understanding of how institutions of higher learning operate will enhance the services we provide to clients.”
Prior to joining Schnader, Ms. Baillie amassed more than 11 years of experience in the higher education field, most recently serving as general counsel for Carlow University. In these capacities, Ms. Baillie focused on matters including disclosures, discipline, discrimination, Title IX, VAWA, accommodating disabilities, privacy, Title IV financial aid, accreditation, investigations, state licensing and state authorization for distance education. Ms. Baillie also has represented institutions before the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights.
“Karen Baillie is a great addition to our growing higher education practice,” said group co-chair Marilyn Kutler. “Our clients will benefit from her scope of knowledge and experience as higher education general counsel and outside counsel at another large firm. She is well-known both in Pittsburgh and throughout education circles.”
In concert with her work in the education field, Ms. Baillie has developed and presented trainings on a myriad of subjects, which include faculty grievances, FERPA, Campus SAVE Act, investigations, harassment, accommodating disabilities, background checks, and wage-and-hour issues.
Outside of her work specific to higher education, Ms. Baillie also handles diverse labor & employment issues including discharge and discipline, discrimination, disabilities accommodation, FLSA, FMLA, OSHA, labor arbitration hearings, union election campaigns, collective bargaining agreements, drug testing, and reductions in force.
Ms. Baillie received her J.D., cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and her B.A., cum laude, in mathematical economics from Colgate University.
