Nixon Peabody is excited to announce the arrival of four partners who join the firm’s M&A and Corporate Transactions practice. The team will be based in Raleigh, North Carolina, a new office location for Nixon Peabody. In the heart of the Research Triangle, Raleigh is a major hub for biotech and high-tech innovation and research.
The team, which includes partners John Erwin, Brian Brown, Angela Cottrell, and Isabelle de Smedt and paralegal Patricia Harris, works with clients in the healthcare and life sciences industries. John, Brian, Angela and Isabelle represent public and private businesses on a wide range of corporate issues including strategic mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and other commercial transactions, both domestically and internationally.

John brings deep insight into the healthcare and life sciences industries. He has worked on numerous biotech transactions, as well as technology transfer and licensing agreements for healthcare and life sciences companies. From a healthcare perspective, John guides clients through the complex regulatory environment, providing compliance advice and negotiating managed care contracts, and other agreements. John graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law and earned his bachelor’s degree from Davidson College.
Brian counsels healthcare and biotechnology clients on a wide range of corporate issues from business formation, raising capital and related tax advice, to corporate reorganizations, divestitures and complex, large-scale mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures. Brian earned his J.D. from Emory University School of Law, and an LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center. He received his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Angela provides corporate and finance counsel to a wide range of clients from emerging life sciences companies to large multinational organizations, nonprofit healthcare systems, academic medical centers and universities. She graduated cum laude from Stetson University College of Law. Angela earned her M.B.A. from the University of Central Florida, and received her undergraduate degree from Florida State University.
Working primarily in Brussels, Belgium, much of Isabelle’s practice involves cross-border transactions, corporate matters and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). She works with international corporations, including many contract research organizations (CROs), on complex mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and provides ongoing compliance advice to global companies in a variety of industries. Isabelle is licensed to practice in Belgium. Isabelle earned her law degree, cum laude, from Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and received an LL.M. from Fordham University School of Law.
