The global law firm Jones Day announces the arrivals of former Federal Trade Commission attorney Lin Kahn as a partner in the Firm’s San Francisco Office, and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Huie as of counsel in its San Diego Office. Ms. Kahn is part of Jones Day’s Antitrust Practice and Mr. Huie will be part of the Firm’s Investigations & White Collar Defense Practice.
“As our Firm continues to grow in California, while also meeting the challenges of the continually evolving legal landscape, it’s very important that we continue to attract lawyers with the experience, talent, and skill set who can address the sophisticated legal needs of our clients,” said Karen Hewitt, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s California Region, which encompasses five offices and more than 270 lawyers. “Both Lin and Rob have those characteristics, and adding them to our California team exemplifies our commitment to client service and continued growth in the region.”
During her time at the FTC, Ms. Kahn’s high profile matters included serving as lead trial counsel in a seven-week antitrust conspiracy trial resulting in a finding of liability and the issuance of a 15-year injunctive order. She led a team of experienced attorneys from across the FTC through a fast-tracked litigation schedule, directing the litigation strategy and case development plan. Ms. Kahn also played a significant role in multiple merger and anticompetitive conduct investigations in the consumer goods, pharmaceutical products, technology, and health care industries.
“Lin brings us first-hand knowledge of, and deep experience with, the current investigative trends and priorities of the FTC in the current enforcement environment,” said Craig Waldman, co-chair of Jones Day’s global Antitrust & Competition Law Practice. “Her experience across several industries will be very valuable to clients everywhere. I look forward to her being part of our global team.”
Prior to joining the FTC, Ms. Kahn was an associate in Jones Day’s San Francisco and Los Angeles offices. Her client engagements included representing a multinational software company in a nationwide antitrust class action alleging a conspiracy among high-tech companies to fix wages through no-poach agreements. She also won a full defense jury verdict for a hospital system in Santa Barbara, California, defeating allegations of an antitrust conspiracy and group boycott, and also litigated a wide range of civil actions, including a wage and hour class action and product liability matters.
Added Aaron Agenbroad, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s San Francisco Office, “Lin was an exceptional lawyer with us prior to joining the FTC, and now returns with a thorough understanding of the nuances and complexities of antitrust law as it applies across industries and jurisdictions. Her background will make her a very valuable resource for our clients, especially during these challenging times. We welcome her back to Jones Day and look forward to working with her in the coming months.”
Mr. Huie spent 12 years at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of California. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, he most recently served as Deputy Chief of the Office’s Major Frauds and Public Corruption Section where he was counsel of record in more than 700 criminal cases, which in addition to Major Frauds and Public Corruption, included General Crimes and Appeals. Mr. Huie’s criminal trials included matters relating to fraud, bribery, money laundering, drug trafficking and border crimes, and threats to public officials.
“Rob’s extensive experience in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, including the time he spent overseas working with foreign governments, positions him perfectly for an important role on our growing team,” said Ted Chung, who leads Jones Day’s Investigations and White Collar Defense Practice. “His thorough understanding of the investigation and discovery processes both domestically and internationally adds great insight and depth to what is already a very talented group of lawyers in our practice. I very much look forward to working with him.”
Notably, Mr. Huie served as counsel during a U.S. Navy corruption investigation involving over 700 subjects, which a major newspaper described as “the worst corruption case in Navy history.” He also represented the U.S. Department of Justice as a diplomat and legal advisor at U.S. Embassies in Algiers, Algeria and in the Western Balkans, assisting foreign governments in the areas of counterterrorism, anti-money laundering, and criminal justice.
“We feel very fortunate to have Rob joining us,” said Steve Geise, Partner-in-Charge of the Firm’s San Diego Office. “He has a complete understanding of current white-collar investigative and enforcement trends, is respected by colleagues and adversaries alike, and knows the Southern California legal community and court system extremely well. These are great benefits for our office and current and prospective clients. We enthusiastically welcome him to Jones Day.”
Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Mr. Huie was an associate in the San Diego office of a national law firm, practicing business litigation before state and federal trial courts, including trademark, unfair competition, trade secrets, defamation, employment, contract, and other commercial disputes. After law school, he served as a clerk for the Hon. José A. Cabranes, United States Circuit Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
