Kirkland & Ellis LLP is pleased to announce that David King has joined the Firm’s San Francisco office as a partner in the Investment Funds Group. Mr. King joins Kirkland from The Carlyle Group (“Carlyle”) where he was a Principal focused on Carlyle’s Global Real Assets business.
“David is an extremely talented and respected attorney with a strong mix of investment funds experience,” said Jeffrey C. Hammes, Chairman of Kirkland’s Global Management Executive Committee. “Having represented some of the world’s most sophisticated funds across a range of industries, including real estate, energy, infrastructure and power, David will be a huge asset to our clients and to our premier investment funds practice.”
While at Carlyle Mr. King acted as general counsel for Carlyle’s second-largest business segment, which included all real estate, energy, infrastructure and power funds. Mr. King was also responsible for SMA structuring and management at Carlyle. Prior to joining Carlyle, Mr. King was an associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, practicing in the firm’s M&A and funds groups. Prior to that, Mr. King was an associate at Millennium Partners, a hedge fund with more than $30 billion of assets under management at the time. Mr. King holds a J.D. from New York University Law School, where he was the senior notes editor of the Journal of Law and Business. Mr. King simultaneously earned an Advanced Certificate in Law and Business from New York University’s Leonard N Stern School of Business. He received his B.A. in economics with a minor in accounting and specialization in computer science from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Mr. King’s appointment follows several recent senior hires within Kirkland’s Investment Funds Group this year. In August 2017, Anand Damodaran, formerly a partner at Ropes & Gray LLP, joined the Firm’s London office as partner; in July 2017, Alpa Patel, formerly Branch Chief of the Private Funds Branch of the investment adviser policy and rulemaking office of the SEC’s Division of Investment Management, joined the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office as partner; in June 2017, Sean Hill, formerly co-head of the private investment funds group at Proskauer Rose LLP, and Stephanie Berdik, formerly a partner at Proskauer Rose LLP, joined the Firm’s Boston office as partners; and in May 2017, Erica Williams, the former Special Assistant and Associate Counsel to President Barack Obama, and Marian Fowler, former Senior Special Counsel to the Director of the Division of Investment Management at the SEC, joined the Firm’s Washington, D.C., office as partners.
