Global law firm Reed Smith LLP today announced the addition of Scott C. Smith as a partner in the firm’s Global Corporate Group in San Francisco. Smith was most recently a partner at Hanson Bridgett. Smith’s addition is the latest in a number of lateral hires that the firm has announced in San Francisco since the beginning of 2017: Paul Mohun, former Associate General Counsel at Gap, Inc., joined the firm at the beginning of February; and a team of five state tax attorneys from Morrison Foerester, led by Andres Vallejo, joined on February 27.
“Scott is a superb addition to our team in San Francisco,” said Matt Petersen, co-chair of Reed Smith’s Global Corporate Group. “His broad and deep transactional experience, along with his tax background, enables him to advise businesses and investors in a wide variety of complex matters. His funds expertise is a welcome addition to our strong and growing global funds practice.”
Smith’s practice focuses on advising institutional investors, corporations, partnerships, LLCs and nonprofits regarding all aspects of their operations. He works with private and public companies on equity and debt financings, mergers and acquisitions and general business issues. He frequently works with venture capital funds, private equity funds, hedge and real estate funds relating to fund formation, investment activities, corporate governance, compliance and fund restructurings. In addition, Smith has significant experience representing large institutional investors with their investments in various funds and asset classes. He works with public and private universities, state, county and city retirement systems and large corporate investors.
Smith also has a substantial practice in the impact investment area. He has acted as legal counsel for some of the leading innovators in this space, including Investors’ Circle, Patient Capital Collaborative, Good Capital/Social Enterprise Expansion Fund, Mindful Capital TBL Capital and Better Ventures.
Commenting on Smith’s arrival, David Thompson, head of Reed Smith’s San Francisco office, said, “We’re continuing to add outstanding talent in San Francisco. Strengthening our corporate transactional group here has been a key focus for us, so Scott’s joining is ideal. His experience working with major pension funds investing in global markets is especially synergistic. One of our San Francisco partners, Harvey Leiderman, is a nationally recognized leader in the field, and so Scott’s addition will certainly enhance the value we bring to our pension fund clients.”
Smith received his J.D. and his LL.M. in Taxation from the University of Houston. He earned an M.A. in International Relations from University of Southern California and a B.A. from California State University, Fresno. Prior to joining Hanson Bridgett in 2004, Smith spent four years at Bingham McCutchen. Smith is a member of the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG), Keiretsu Forum and Investors’ Circle.
