Cozen O’Connor announced today the further expansion of its west coast IP practice with the hiring of Jeremy M. Dukmen, who brings to the firm a strong background in patent portfolio management covering a vast array of domestic and global technologies. Dukmen comes to Cozen O’Connor from BakerHostetler, where he practiced in that firm’s IP department. He joins Cozen O’Connor as a member and will work out of its fast-growing Seattle office.
A mechanical engineer before entering the legal profession, Dukmen has substantial IP experience with a range of technologies, including medical devices and powered lift assist technologies. His background includes drafting and prosecuting mechanical technology-related U.S. and foreign patent applications; representing clients in patent post-grant proceedings; providing strategic guidance on large, complex patent portfolios; and helping clients analyze and develop strategically targeted patent portfolios for key commercial products.
“With a growing number of technology markets now worth tens of billions of dollars, Jeremy can step right in and help our clients properly evaluate and protect their innovative technologies,” says Camille M. Miller, co-chair of Cozen O’Connor’s Intellectual Property Department. “Further, by leveraging his engineering background, Jeremy can also provide the guidance needed to help them avoid what are often costly patent disputes. I’m thrilled to welcome him to our IP team.”
Working with several divisions of a major, multinational medical device company, Dukmen recently advised on patent portfolio management; provided freedom-to-operate assessments; analyzed patent portfolios in view of client and competitor commercial products; and drafted and prosecuted claim language to cover both client and competitor commercial products.
In a previous patent dispute, he represented the owner of a wireless location technology in a patent infringement case that was affirmed by the Federal Circuit, thereby maintaining a mid-eight-figure award and an injunction.
“Moving to Cozen O’Connor allows me to be part of a prominent, fast-growing IP team here in Seattle,” Dukmen says. “Greater-Seattle is a fertile region in the global technology space and I’m looking forward to helping the firm develop and grow its IP presence here.”
Dukmen earned his J.D. at Villanova University School of Law and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Lafayette College. Prior to entering the legal profession, he worked at a plastics extrusion plant.
Dukmen joins two attorneys from Seattle’s Seed IP Law Group LLP, Frank Abramonte and Lorraine Linford, who joined the firm in August, making the Seattle office Cozen O’Connor’s fifth largest with more than 30 attorneys.
It also continues the overall expansion of the firm’s IP practice, which earlier this month added litigator Thomas J. Fisher to its Washington, D.C., IP team. In July Susan Grueneberg — one of California’s best known and highly regarded franchise law attorneys — also joined the west coast IP team, taking up residence in the firm’s Los Angeles office.
