The law firm of Troutman Sanders LLP is pleased to announce the addition of Ronald Sum to its Insurance and Maritime practices in Hong Kong.
“With over 20 years of specialization in insurance and maritime, trade and logistics at leading international firms in Hong Kong, Ronald Sum, a dispute resolution and regulatory lawyer, adds considerable strength to our practice,” said Eric Szweda, Hong Kong Office Managing Partner. “Additionally, Sum has handled an array of commercial disputes, including court actions, mediations and numerous arbitrations in London, Australia, the United States, Singapore, Taiwan, China and Hong Kong, pursuant to HKIAC, ICC, CIETAC, LMAA, SIAC and industry-specific rules, which adds further depth to Troutman Sanders’ International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Team.”
Sum serves as Chair of the Selection Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and is qualified to practice law in England, Hong Kong and Australia. Sum is also an accredited mediator.
Sum and his three-member team will combine with the existing litigation group in Hong Kong, which includes Szweda, who heads the firm’s International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Team. The combined group has experience in shareholders disputes, Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) and Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) investigations and other internal investigations, disputes involving intellectual property, employment, products liability, maritime, transportation and logistics, insurance, property, probate and commercial contracts and dealings.
“Troutman Sanders’ impressive growth in Asia and its pre-eminent position in insurance globally, with more than 100 lawyers specializing in insurance law, are among the reasons that made the opportunity to join the firm highly attractive to me,” Sum said.
At Troutman Sanders, Sum’s insurance practice will concentrate principally in the areas of directors and officers, professional liability and marine property and casualty insurance.
Sum has written numerous articles and presented on transportation, logistics, and insurance topics. He is a member of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers, the Hong Kong Insurance Club, the Hong Kong Shipowners Association, and the Hong Kong Shippers’ Association.
Sum received a DIPL from the Southampton University in England, an LL.M. from the University of South Wales and an LL.B. from Sydney University. He received a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) degree from the University of New South Wales. Sum also is fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin and English.
