After 16 Years, Chuck Comey Returns to the US

Morrison & Foerster has relocated partner Chuck Comey from Shanghai to Palo Alto. Comey has spent the last 16 years in Asia. He first spent nine years in Morrison’s Tokyo office at which point he moved to Shanghai to launch the firm’s new office.

Nixon Peabody Hires Ex-Heller Henry Liu

Nixon Peabody has taken on ex-Heller partner, Henry Liu, to oversee the China practice. Liu is to split his time between NY and Shanghai. Between 1995 and 2000, Liu was general counsel and director-general at the China Securities Regulatory Commission. Nixon Peabody welcomes Liu with open arms.

DLA Piper Boosts Asia Practice

DLA Piper is making its presence in Asia known with the recent hire of Kit Kwok. Kwok joins the firm’s China corporate practice as partner. DLA has also boosted its Asia practice by promoting five other lawyers to partner. Kwok, previously with Roosevelt Sino Retailers, will work out of the Shanghai office.

Thelen’s China Practice Jumps Ship

Pillsbury has recently scored Thelen’s China practice! This news came after rumors that Thelen’s attempts to merge with Nixon Peabody were to no avail. The lateral team is led by partners, Louis Bevilacqua, Mary Utterback, Joseph Tiano Jr. and the former head of Thelen’s Shanghai office, Thomas Shoesmith. Shoesmith is now in charge of Pillsbury’s Shanghai office.
