Nixon Peabody Adds IP Counseling and Transactions Team

San Francisco, CA, and Washington, DC. Nixon Peabody continues its West Coast expansion with the addition of a patent counseling and IP transactions team. Led by San Francisco–based partner On Lu, the team includes attorneys Dr. Eduardo (Ed) Quiñones and Dr. Zhou Lu each of whom bring a deep knowledge of technology issues and the challenges and opportunities facing high-tech companies.

oN, Ed, and Zhou create IP strategies for some of the most well-known high-tech companies in Asia. Working with multinationals in China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea, the team helps these businesses to creatively monetize and generate new revenue from their IP portfolios, while attempting to minimize and/or defend against litigation. One of the ways they do this is by bringing together a client’s technical, product, and sales divisions to mine for new patentable concepts to create a richer and more robust portfolio. By leveraging both their business and legal knowledge, the team helps Asian companies develop and then launch better protected products in the U.S. and around the globe.

“oN and his team bring an innovative approach to client service,” said Jeff Costellia, leader of Nixon Peabody’s IP Counseling and Transactions practice. “The team has an impressive and progressive practice that is a nice complement to the work our current IP, corporate and real estate attorneys do for Asian companies who are investing in the U.S.”

“oN is an exciting addition to our growing San Francisco office. The high-powered expertise oN and his team bring in a variety of technology areas will be a tremendous asset for our clients in California. We benefit from their industry knowledge and terrific energy,” added Thomas Gaynor, managing partner of Nixon Peabody’s San Francisco office. “I’m thrilled that oN and his colleagues have selected to grow their practices with our team for their clients’ benefit, especially now, as we continue our build in the IP and corporate practices in San Francisco. We’re excited to have them aboard.”

oN leverages more than ten years of experience in complex, multiparty patent and trademark litigation before the International Trade Commission (ITC), and in federal district courts around the country. For the past four years, oN has served as chief IP counsel for the European Innovation Academy, where he teaches the IP curriculum he developed to entrepreneurs and startups around the world. Prior to becoming a lawyer, oN spent ten years launching U.S. high-tech companies internationally. Two of those companies became public. Outside of his busy legal practice, oN recently completed his second term as co-chair of BALIF, the oldest and largest LGBT bar association in the country. oN currently serves on the board of governors at the University of San Francisco School of Law, where he earned his JD. He received his BA from the University of Redlands and his MBA from National University.

Ed focuses his practice on patent procurement and post-grant proceedings for wide array of technologies. Originally an engineer with Lucent Technologies’ Bell Labs group, Ed uses his extensive technical training and experience in electrical engineering and computer science to counsel corporations, universities, startup companies, and individuals on building and maintaining effective intellectual property portfolios. He earned his PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, his JD from the University of Florida, and his BE from Vanderbilt University. Ed is fluent in Spanish.

Zhou focuses his practice on intellectual property development and protection. Prior to his law firm career, Zhou spent six years as a patent attorney and manager of patent engineering for a multinational semiconductor company. Zhou graduated from Santa Clara University School of Law and earned his PhD in engineering science and mechanics and ME in computer science and engineering from Pennsylvania State University. Zhou can read, speak and write Chinese/Mandarin fluently.
