Freshfields advises on US$1.25bn investment in Airtel Africa

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (‘Freshfields’) has advised Airtel on a US$1.25bn investment in Airtel Africa by six leading global investors including Warburg Pincus, Softbank, Temasek and Singtel. The deal is one of Africa’s largest cross-border M&A transactions in 2018. Airtel is headquartered in India and is the world’s third-largest mobile network operator, and its subsidiary Airtel Africa is the second largest telecom operator in Africa, with operations in 14 countries and a customer base of 91 million.

The Freshfields team advising on the deal was led by Singapore-based partners Arun Balasubramanian and Nigel Gleeson. Partners Shawn der Kinderen and Thijs Flokstra advised on Dutch law matters, and partner Peter Clements provided advice on tax issues. Advice on various UK aspects of the deal was provided by partners Julian Makin and David Ludwick.
