Global law firm Clyde & Co has appointed leading insurance and cybersecurity practitioner John Moran as a partner, based in Sydney.
John moved to Australia in 2012, having practiced in London and Dublin, where he specialised in contentious insurance. Along with being admitted in New South Wales, John is admitted in Ireland, England and Wales. He was made a Partner at his former firm in May 2016.
John’s practice encompasses cybersecurity and IT liability, professional indemnity, financial institutions and directors & officers, which complements Clyde & Co’s insurance footprint in Australia.
John was responsible for the establishment of the data breach incident response practice at his former firm, and is considered by many in the market to be a pioneer in this area.
Australia’s new notifiable data breach regime came into force in February, while the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) also comes into force on 25 May 2018. It’s expected that these changes will lead to a noticeable increase in demand for specialised advice in this area in Australia in 2018. John’s early specialisation in this area will benefit clients, especially later in the year as regulators explore the powers available to them under the new legal regimes. It is also expected that organisations will focus more on incident response preparedness in 2018, with clients looking to build specialist advisors into their incident response plans.
In addition to his insurance work, John has also shown leadership in initiatives such as diversity and inclusion, technology and innovation and graduate recruitment. He has a keen interest in innovation and was responsible for the implementation of several successful client-facing technology driven efficiency projects at his previous firm, where he also sat on the innovation committee.
Clyde & Co Senior Partner, Simon Konsta, says: “John has a standout reputation in the insurance industry and a practice that runs across the core of our insurancebusiness in Australia. His addition will be of benefit to our clients locally, in the London market and globally. His addition to our firm will add additional depth and breadth to an already market-leading practice.”
Commenting on his appointment, Managing Partner – Australia, Dean Carrigan says: “John is a fantastic addition to the firm not only here in Australia, but also globally. Many of John’s clients are already clients of Clyde & Co and there is no doubt that he is regarded as a trusted advisor by many insurers.”
John adds: “I’m delighted to be joining Clyde & Co, a firm which I have observed closely for several years during its period of significant growth. I’m enthused about the opportunities which my practice will have at Clyde & Co and the global footprint that the firm will offer my existing clientele.”
Several members of John’s team have joined him at Clyde & Co. They are: senior associates Mairead Cusack and Travis Luk and associates Richard Berkahn and Reece Corbett-Wilkins.
Clyde & Co was established in Australia in late 2012 and has since then grown from 4 partners in 2 offices to 25 partners and more than 200 staff across 4 offices. Recent appointments at the firm include Cameron Thomson who is a corporate real estate partner, also in Sydney.
