Dentons Adds Competition and Economic Regulation heavyweight to its IPT Practice

Dentons today welcomes Competition and Economic Regulation Partner, Donald Robertson, to its Intellectual Property and Technology (IPT) practice. Robertson joins from Herbert Smith Freehills LLP.

Don joins the Sydney office as a corporate advisory and dispute resolution lawyer specialising in capital markets and regulatory law, competition law, international contract and commercial law, blockchain and cryptocurrency law and international investment law. Don is also heavily involved in mergers and acquisitions, and energy and resources matters.

In a career spanning nearly 30 years, Don has advised clients including Visa Inc and the Australian Securities Exchange. Don has also advised on numerous regulatory proceedings related to the Australian Securities and Investment Commission, the Australian Competition Consumer Commission and the Reserve Bank of Australia; as well as numerous court and other proceedings.

Don has also contributed to teaching and mentoring law students through various academic positions over many years, including his current position as Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Sydney Law School. In addition, Don has authored and contributed to many articles, papers, commentaries and published books.

Dentons’ Australia Region Chair and Australasia CEO, Doug Stipanicev said that Don’s extensive experience, particularly with his strong focus on financial services regulation, would complement the existing strengths in Dentons’ IPT and Banking and Finance groups.

“Once again we are delighted to welcome another new partner to Dentons. Don makes a fantastic addition to our highly recognised IPT team, and his experience will be valuable for many of our clients.”

“Dentons has already made great progress on its growth strategy in 2021. Lateral hires are attracted by Dentons’ strong reputation in the Australian market, our global reach that outstrips any other global law firm and the opportunities this brings for cross-regional work, and our commitment to growth and client service,” said Mr. Stipanicev.

Commenting on his appointment, Don said: “I am very excited to be a partner in Dentons, to practice Competition and Economic Regulation law. Dentons is a firm with a global footprint and mindset, yet with connected and local management.

“The global expertise and client base is amazing. Being part of this network in this region allows me to provide clients the advice needed in a world which, more than ever, needs to establish and maintain strong global connections. The business unit in which I will work, the Intellectual Property, Technology & Competition team, is an impressive, market-leading group. I am very pleased to be part of that group.”

Don’s appointment follows closely from that of Recovery and Restructuring partners, Claire Petersen in Brisbane and John Park in Perth, and Banking and Finance Special Counsel Richard Mann, in Melbourne.
