The global law firm Jones Day has announced that Maxwell (Mac) Fox is joining the Tokyo Office as a partner in the Firm’s Intellectual Property Practice.

An experienced U.S. patent litigator and a resident of Tokyo since 2006, Mr. Fox represents clients in the electronics, computer sciences, and life sciences industries in patent disputes against competitors and patent assertion entities. He has also assisted clients with strategy licensing programs and the negotiation of license agreements, advised on the structure of technology transactions, and provided counsel on patent and other IP matters critical to the clients’ businesses.

In addition to his IP litigation, licensing, and counseling work, Mr. Fox has represented clients in connection with business torts, unfair competition, breach of contract, fraud, and other commercial disputes, and also has experience representing clients in connection with criminal and civil litigation related to cartel investigations. His significant matters include defending one of the world’s largest OEM notebook computer manufacturers in a six-patent dispute (which culminated in a unanimous United States Supreme Court opinion, favoring Mr. Fox’s client, after seven years of litigation); defending a Japanese company in a multi-patent case involving telecommunications and network security technology; representing a Japanese pharmaceutical company in enforcing its U.S. patent rights against several generic competitors, and representing a leading telecommunications company in connection with the negotiation of FRAND licenses for 4G/LTE standard essential patents.

A frequent speaker on intellectual property law, Mr. Fox has lectured on patent matters to the Japan Patent Attorneys Association and to the Chung Hwa Research Institute in Taiwan. He has also guest lectured as part of an intellectual property law course at Keio University Law School. In 2015, Mr. Fox argued one side of a mock oral argument before the Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit as part of a symposium held in Tokyo to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the establishment of Japan’s Intellectual Property High Court.
