Simpson Thacher Represents Shinsei Bank in $869 Million Offering of Common Stock

The Tokyo office of Simpson Thacher recently represented Shinsei Bank, Limited in a global offering of common stock that raised approximately $869 million for the issuer. Morgan Stanley & Co. International plc and Nomura International plc were the joint lead managers and joint bookrunners. Approximately one-quarter of the shares in the offering were subscribed for by J. Christopher Flowers and investment vehicles advised by the investment firm J.C. Flowers & Co. LLC. The offering was conducted pursuant to Rule 144A and Regulation S.

White & Case Advises Lenders on 165 Billion Yen Refinancing for eAccess and eMobile

Global law firm White & Case LLP acted as international counsel to the lenders in a 165 billion yen (approximately US$2 billion) syndicated bank facility provided to eAccess Ltd., the Japanese internet service provider and parent of mobile data company, eMobile Ltd. This landmark transaction is the first in the Japanese market to combine a syndicated facility with a simultaneous high yield bond. It is also the first major syndicated telecoms financing in Japan since the global financial crisis. Adding to the deal’s complexity was the planned merger of eAccess and eMobile that occurred on 31 March, the date of the drawdown under the syndicated facility agreement.

Blake Dawson Opens Office in Tokyo

Blake Dawson Has Big Plans (In Tokyo)

Blake Dawson has announced that it will not be merging with another UK firm and will instead focus on the Asia legal market. The firm plans to open an office in Tokyo in early 2010. The new firm will work closely with the office in Jakarta due to the increase of activity between Japan and Indonesia. The next step in the plan is to focus on the Australia market.

Jones Day Looses Partner in Tokyo

Jones Day has lost a partner in Tokyo.  Tadakatsu Sano resigned for the firm two weeks ago because he is set to be the newest chief executive assistant to Yukio Hatoyama , Japan’s new Prime Minister.  Sano joined Jones Day three years ago.  Prior to that, he was vice minister for international affairs in Japan’s Ministry of Economy, trade, and Industry.

Lovells Adds Raven in Tokyo

MoFo’s Tokyo Up 15%

Morrison & Forester’s Tokyo office is doing well, despite the global recession. Ken Siegal, managing partner, reports that its budget grew by 15% in 2008; they continue to stay very busy.
