BCLP Expands Investigations, Financial Regulation & White Collar Team with New Partner in Washington

Global law firm Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (BCLP) today announced that J. Ashley Ebersole has joined the firm as a partner within the Investigations, Financial Regulation & White Collar Practice Group, residing in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. Ebersole joins the firm from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Ebersole’s work at the SEC included lead roles in all aspects of SEC investigations and litigation involving both domestic and international parties. He also was a member of the SEC’s cross-division working groups with responsibility for shaping the agency’s response to emerging technologies, including the Dark Web Working Group and Distributed Ledger Technology Working Group since its inception. Through these affiliations, Ebersole initiated and conducted some of the first investigations of securities law violations involving digital assets.

“I am very excited to be joining BCLP’s top tier enforcement defense practice,” Ebersole said. “I look forward to working with colleagues in D.C. and across the firm’s impressive global platform to serve clients from both the traditional securities and financial technology areas.”

“Ashley’s background and experience will be a huge asset to our clients, and we are pleased to welcome him to our firm’s growing Washington office,” said Washington, D.C., Office Managing Partner LaDawn Naegle. “Our strong presence in Washington is an important component of our global platform and we remain committed to growing that presence with high-quality lateral partners like Ashley. We are excited about Ashley’s arrival and the strategic growth it represents.”

Ebersole’s diverse workload at the SEC included negotiating resolution of actions against securities issuers for misstatements in their SEC filings, investigating investment advisers and funds for undisclosed fees and conflicts of interest, litigating an action in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York that shut down a Ponzi scheme, and investigating and negotiating resolution of the first enforcement action against a rating agency in the digital asset space. Prior to joining the SEC, he was an associate in the government enforcement litigation and regulatory compliance practice of another global law firm.

“We look forward to welcoming Ashley to our firm,” said Investigations, Financial Regulation & White Collar Practice Group Co-Leader Mark Srere. “His SEC experience will not only enhance our growing investigations and white collar practice, it will bolster our fintech compliance and enforcement group. Global Litigation Department Managing Partner Christine Cesare added, “Ashley’s broad SEC experience, including his expertise with emerging issues involving fintech and blockchain, coupled with his proven leadership skills, will be an excellent addition to our team and provide additional depth for our clients in important regulatory areas.”
