Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney expands its thriving Washington, D.C. litigation team with the addition of shareholder John P. Cunningham, who joins Buchanan from Baker McKenzie. Cunningham is the third litigation hire in D.C. in as many months, joining Jonathan D. Janow and Phillip C. Chang – both also from Am Law 50 firms.
Cunningham is a former senior trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and investigative analyst for the criminal division of the FBI. He also served as a federal law clerk to the Honorable Gerald B. Lee in the Eastern District of Virginia. While with the FBI, he received formal commendations from the Director of the FBI and officials from the DOJ and IRS for his investigative work. At the DOJ, he was granted a distinguished service award from the Attorney General for his leadership in litigating and resolving a high-profile class action on behalf of aggrieved U.S. service members.
Cunningham’s practice focuses on white collar defense, internal investigations, regulatory and civil enforcement matters, and global compliance program design, development, and defense. As a partner at his prior firm, he represented companies before the DOJ, Securities and Exchange Commission, and other agencies in connection with an array of investigations involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), money laundering laws, export controls and sanctions, fraud, asset forfeiture, and related issues.

He earned his B.A. in International Relations from the College of William and Mary, his M.A. in American Legal History from the George Washington University, and his J.D. from the University of Richmond, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Law Review.
