Boies Schiller Flexner LLP today announced that Jesse Panuccio, the former acting Associate Attorney General of the United States, will join the firm in Washington D.C. and Florida as a partner, focusing on high-stakes litigation and appeals, regulatory counseling, enforcement defense, and crisis management. Panuccio has served at the highest levels of the federal and Florida governments, and has handled the most difficult litigation and regulatory issues in both public service and private practice. He will join the firm in early December.
“We are very pleased to welcome Jesse to the firm and excited for our clients to benefit from his wealth of knowledge and expertise working in the highest levels of federal and state governments,” BSF Chairman David Boies said. “Jesse’s unique background in high-stakes litigation, appeals, and crisis management will complement our firm’s leading practice in these areas. He is an exceptional litigator and we are excited to add him to our teams in Washington and Florida.”
From 2017 to 2019, Panuccio served in the leadership of the United States Department of Justice, for much of that time as the acting Associate Attorney General, the third-ranking position in the Department. In that role, Panuccio oversaw the civil and criminal work of the Antitrust, Civil, Civil Rights, Environment and Natural Resources, and Tax Divisions. He also served as DOJ’s Regulatory Reform Officer and Vice Chair of the Task Force on Market Integrity and Consumer Fraud.
Karen Dunn, a member of BSF’s Management Committee, said, “Since its founding, the firm has been a go-to place for clients looking for lawyers who can help them manage their biggest, most complex problems in courtrooms, hearing rooms and board rooms. Jesse’s background in government, politics, with the media, and as a litigator equips him to do precisely this. He will be a tremendous addition to the team.”
Panuccio, 39, also brings significant expertise successfully managing high-stakes litigation, appeals, and regulatory matters in Florida. He previously served as general counsel to former Florida Governor Rick Scott, a role in which Panuccio supervised the general counsels of most state agencies, managed major litigation for the state, and advised the governor on scores of judicial nominations. Panuccio later led the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for three years, serving as the chief labor, economic-development, and land-use official for the nation’s third most-populous state. Panuccio is currently a commissioner on the Florida Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission, and during his tenure four of the seven current justices have been appointed. Panuccio’s practice in Miami and Fort Lauderdale will draw on both his high-level federal and state experience, focusing on both federal litigation and high-stakes appeals in the state courts and the Florida Supreme Court.
Stuart Singer, Administrative Partner of the firm’s Fort Lauderdale office, said, “Jesse is well-known and highly regarded in Florida for his work on some of the most meaningful litigation and regulatory cases in the state. Our practice will benefit enormously both from Jesse’s deep background here in Florida and his federal expertise, and we look forward to welcoming him to our team of skilled litigators.”
“Having spent the majority of my career navigating high-stakes legal matters, I am delighted to be joining Boies Schiller Flexner, which is well known for its work on bet-the-company issues. I’m thrilled to join this team of all-star litigators and crisis managers, and I look forward to helping the firm grow its federal and Florida practices,” Panuccio said.
