Freshfields Strengthens US Litigation Practice with Addition of Senior Federal Prosecutor Daniel Braun

Daniel Braun, one of the US Department of Justice’s leading international white-collar prosecutors, has joined Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer as a partner in the firm’s Washington office

Daniel Braun, one of the US Department of Justice’s leading international white-collar prosecutors, has joined Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer as a partner in the firm’s Washington office. Dan returned to private practice on April 7, joining one of the premiere white-collar and global investigations practices in the world.

Dan brings to Freshfields his extraordinary experience leading the investigation and prosecution of some of the most complex and important federal cases in the Department’s history, most recently as Deputy Chief of the Fraud Section of the Criminal Division. Dan ran the LIBOR and FX investigations into the conduct of bankers at the world’s leading financial institutions, and he took the lead in coordinating with law enforcement agencies around the world on those cases. Widely respected by the defense bar for thoughtfulness and fairness, Dan has also been recognized repeatedly by the law enforcement community for his leadership, creativity and effectiveness: he has received the US Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service, the Assistant Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service and the Prosecutor of the Year Award from the Federal Law Enforcement Foundation. Before moving to the Fraud Section in Washington, Dan had a distinguished career as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York, where he investigated and tried cases involving securities fraud, official corruption and other economic crimes. He also helped to oversee the Office’s appellate unit as Deputy Chief of Appeals. Before beginning his prosecutorial career in the Southern District, Dan was a partner in private practice at a litigation boutique in Washington.

Dan’s wide-ranging expertise in handling cross-border investigations and forging cooperative relationships among foreign prosecution, law enforcement and regulatory authorities complements the firm’s broad white-collar investigations capabilities both in the United States and globally. At Freshfields, Dan will focus on the defense of investigations into alleged market misconduct and collusion, foreign bribery and corruption and economic sanctions and related issues for public companies and financial institutions.

Commenting on Dan’s appointment, Aaron Marcu, head of the firm’s US Litigation Practice, said, “We are delighted to welcome Dan to our white-collar investigations team. Dan’s expertise in complex global investigations is a perfect fit for our rapidly growing multi-jurisdictional defense practice.”

David Scott, Global Head of Dispute Resolution, said, “Dan’s arrival is a wonderful addition to the leading regulatory enforcement team we have been building across the US, London, Europe and Asia. Our outstanding range of recent assignments that straddle multiple jurisdictions reflects our global clients’ demand for an integrated one-firm approach to handling their biggest and most complex challenges.”

Dan said, “It is truly an honor to join Freshfields. The firm stands out for its unique ability to help clients navigate the most complex and important enforcement matters, especially in the landscape we see today, where investigations frequently raise multifaceted issues in multiple jurisdictions. I look forward to being a part of an outstanding and growing white-collar group in the US that is one component of the leading international practice that Freshfields has built and continues to strengthen.”

Adam Siegel, regional managing partner for the US and co-head of the firm’s global investigations practice, added, “Dan has had an incredibly successful career in public service, and we are delighted to have him. His leadership experience, investigations expertise and international outlook make him a perfect fit for Freshfields. I have known Dan for many years and, on a personal level, too, he will be a great fit for the team we are building in the US.”

To meet clients’ demands for more international experience, Freshfields has bolstered its US practice with the addition of nine high-profile lateral partners over the past two years. Dan follows the partner appointments of Linda Martin to the US litigation practice; Peter Lyons, Mitchell Presser and Howard Klein to the US corporate practice; Valerie Ford Jacob, Paul Tropp and Michael Levitt to the US capital markets practice; and Jim Douglas and Dave Almroth to the US finance practice. These appointments demonstrate Freshfields’ commitment to long-term strategic investments in the United States and enhance Freshfields’ status as the law firm of choice for international corporations and financial institutions.
