Hogan Lovells Adds Former Top White House Trade and Economic Adviser Kelly Ann Shaw as Partner

Global law firm Hogan Lovells is pleased to announce that Kelly Ann Shaw is joining the firm as a partner in its International Trade and Investment practice. Shaw will also play an important role in the firm’s Government Relations and Public Affairs practice.

“After nearly a decade of government service, I am excited to return to private practice. I have worked with and come to know many of the trade and public policy lawyers at Hogan Lovells and am very pleased to be joining such a strong and reputable international team,” said Shaw. “There have been many significant developments related to trade, investment and other key global economic policies over the last few years, with more to come — I look forward to assisting and positioning our clients to successfully navigate those changing tides.”

Shaw joins the firm after serving at the White House as the President’s Deputy Assistant for International Economic Affairs and Deputy Director of the National Economic Council. In this role, Shaw was a senior adviser to the President on matters of international economic policy, including trade, investment, development, global economics, energy and the environment. Serving on both the National Security Council and National Economic Council, Shaw led the Office of International Economic Affairs and played an instrumental role in a wide range of legislation, negotiations and agreements, including the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and the China Phase One agreement.

Shaw was also a key negotiator for the White House on trade and economic issues and served as the lead negotiator for the U.S. at the G7, G20 and APEC. In this role, Shaw developed strong working relations with officials from numerous countries, overseeing approximately 25 ministerial and 150 working groups across a variety of political, national security, and economic topics. Prior to her service at the White House, Shaw held important positions with the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) in both Washington, D.C. and Geneva, Switzerland and with the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ways & Means.

“At a time when the rules of global trade and economics are constantly being tested and changed, having a lawyer like Kelly Ann on our team will be a tremendous boon for our clients,” said Alice Valder Curran, leader of Hogan Lovells’ Global Regulatory practice. “Her reputation for working across both sides of the aisle to get things done and her experience at the highest levels of government are an excellent fit for our firm and a great addition to our already lauded international trade and investment and government relations practices.”

“At this time of evolving trade relationships, and the intense global economic uncertainty spurred by the spread of the coronavirus, we are fortunate to have Kelly Ann joining our global team to assist our clients,” said Deen Kaplan, co-leader of Hogan Lovells’ International Trade and Investment practice.

Shaw received her JD with honors from Columbia University School of Law along with a Certificate in Global Business Law from Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and an MSc with honors from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
