The global firm Jones Day announces that John Gore, who most recently served as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Civil Rights Division, for the U.S. Department of Justice, returns to Jones Day as partner in the Firm’s Government Regulation Practice and is based in its Washington Office. Mr. Gore joined the DOJ in January of 2017.
During his tenure at the DOJ, Mr. Gore vigorously and successfully prosecuted a wide array of federal civil rights cases across the country, including in such areas as employment and housing discrimination, human trafficking, voting rights, religious freedom, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Mr. Gore also oversaw the prosecution of several high-profile hate crimes.
“John’s breadth of experience at the Department of Justice and his dealings with the highest levels of government enhance an already deep bench of lawyers with extensive understanding of how government agencies operate,” said Don McGahn, former White House Counsel, who co-leads Jones Day’s Government Regulation Practice. “His in-depth knowledge is valuable to clients navigating complicated legal and regulatory issues. I welcome him back to Jones Day.”
Before joining the DOJ, Mr. Gore served as a partner in Jones Day’s Issues & Appeals Practice, litigating complex appeals and trials concerning products liability, redistricting and voting rights, antitrust issues, class action defense, and aviation regulation.

Mr. Gore has argued before numerous appellate courts, as well as before federal and state trial courts across the country. His return follows other prominent additions that recently joined Jones Day’s Government Regulation Practice including Brett Shumate, who also joined from DOJ after serving as Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Federal Programs Branch of the Civil Division; Schuyler J. Schouten, who was previously Senior Associate Counsel to the President and Deputy Legal Advisor to the National Security Council, and Robert Luther III, who joined after serving as Associate Counsel to the United States President.
