Dentons announces today that Michael Franzinger has joined the Firm’s Intellectual Property and Technology practice as a partner in its Washington, DC, office. Franzinger offers clients extensive experience in patent, trade secret and IP litigation, with a focus on the administrative law aspects of intellectual property protection, particularly Section 337 investigations before the International Trade Commission (ITC) and inter partes reviews before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Franzinger served as Partner at Sidley Austin prior to joining Dentons.
A highly accomplished trial and appellate lawyer, Franzinger has represented clients in more than 30 ITC Section 337 investigations. Additionally, he has represented clients in district court lawsuits, patent reexaminations and reviews, arbitrations and mediations, license negotiations and merger due diligence. As first-chair counsel, he has helped his clients efficiently prevail on a variety of issues ranging from jurisdictional and standing challenges to patent invalidation.
With a background in materials science, Franzinger routinely handles technologies ranging from electronics and software to chemistry, including networking equipment, touchscreen interfaces, electronics packaging, agricultural chemicals, and renewable energy. The ITC cases that Franzinger has litigated have included an investigation related to surface texturing of solar cells, in which the commission found no violation. He also served as first-chair trial counsel for an e-commerce company in an investigation involving motorized two-wheeled self-balancing vehicles, in which he secured an initial determination of no jurisdiction.
“We are delighted to welcome Mike to our expanding practice,” said Monica Richman, global chair of the Intellectual Property and Technology practice at Dentons. “His extensive experience in IP litigation matters, particularly in Section 337 investigations before the ITC, make him a valuable addition to our team. His diverse technical knowledge and impressive track record align perfectly with our Firm’s commitment to delivering exceptional client service.”
