Manatt Adds to Corporate and Energy Capabilities in Washington, D.C.

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, announced today that Brian E. Ashin has joined the firm’s Corporate and Finance practice as a partner in its Washington, D.C., office. Ashin comes to Manatt from Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati.

Ashin’s practice focuses on project finance, mergers, acquisitions, private equity and corporate finance transactions involving the energy, infrastructure, entertainment, healthcare, manufacturing, real estate and retail industries. He has represented lenders, arrangers, sponsors, borrowers, and equity investors in project finance, infrastructure finance, banking, acquisition finance, project development, project-related structured finance, and general corporate transactions in the energy sector (including renewable energy and other innovative energy technologies such as geothermal, biofuel, fuel cell, solar and wind), both in the United States and internationally. Ashin also has experience working with new and established venture-backed companies in the clean technology and sports industries.

“Brian is highly skilled with a well-rounded corporate practice that encompasses a number of industries where Manatt is a leader, particularly in the energy sector,” said Ben D. Orlanski, chair of the firm’s Business, Finance and Tax division. “Manatt regularly advises energy industry players—from traditional producers to renewable and cleantech companies—on complex transactions and regulatory issues. With Brian, we have added to our strong national team an attorney with stellar project finance and M&A experience who, in concert with lawyers in our environmental and regulatory practices, will provide exceptional service to clients.”

Orlanski noted that the combination of Ashin with other recent additions to the Washington, D.C., office, including Douglas Boggs, Alan Noskow and Daniel Addison, “adds to Manatt’s significant energy and environmental presence on the East Coast. Together with the firm’s talented lawyers in New York and California, they provide a valuable, comprehensive resource to clients looking for ways to strengthen their enterprises and increase performance, opportunities and growth.” Boggs and Noskow joined the firm from Squire Patton Boggs in April, and their practices encompass M&A, private equity, venture capital, project financing, infrastructure and other complex business transactions in the energy industry, both domestically and internationally. Addison, who joined in May, also from Squire Patton Boggs, provides critical strategic positioning and support to clients as they navigate federal and international environmental policies.

“Manatt’s strong corporate and finance practices attract high-quality and complex work that will provide an ideal platform to service my clients and an exciting opportunity to grow my practice,” Ashin said. “I am very impressed with the firm’s focus on providing thoughtful, sophisticated client service and look forward to helping the firm continue to build and grow its leading corporate practice—not only in D.C., but nationwide.”

Manatt’s Corporate and Finance practice advises public and private, domestic and international corporations, combining the strength of insightful legal counsel with practical, hands-on industry experience. Partners have served as executives and in-house counsel with financial institutions, major insurers, large venture capital funds, global infrastructure developers and a variety of technology companies. Manatt provides clients with sound business judgment on issues from capital markets to corporate governance. The practice has been included by U.S. News & World Report in its 2015 ranking of the country’s “Best Law Firms.”

Ashin earned his B.A. from Brandeis University and his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.
