O’Melveny announced today that leading intellectual property patent litigator Robert F. Shaffer has joined the firm’s Washington, DC office as a partner in its Intellectual Property & Technology Practice Group. Recognized by The Legal 500 U.S. and IAM 1000, Shaffer comes to O’Melveny from Finnegan, where he most recently served as the firm’s Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Practice Group leader and co-chair of the Life Sciences Practice.
Shaffer, who has an M.S. in physiology and biophysics, is a first-chair trial lawyer with extensive experience handling complex life sciences patent litigation. Throughout his 23 years in private practice, he has represented some of the world’s most innovative pharmaceutical and medical device companies in dozens of major cases, including Hatch-Waxman disputes, International Trade Commission (ITC) actions, and complex arbitrations. He has also represented clients before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Shaffer helps clients through every step of patent litigation—from pre-trial counseling, to leading trial teams, and through appeal. Along with his life sciences work, Shaffer also represents consumer electronics, software, and gaming companies in patent matters.
His arrival further strengthens O’Melveny’s acclaimed roster of patent litigators and expands the firm’s formidable East Coast capabilities in the intellectual property and technology arena.
“I am delighted to welcome Rob to O’Melveny. His skills and experience in handling complex life sciences patent litigation make him an ideal addition to our award-winning Intellectual Property and Technology team. It is a pleasure to welcome him aboard,” said O’Melveny Chair Bradley J. Butwin.
“I am thrilled to join O’Melveny’s all-star team of Intellectual Property and Technology litigators,” Shaffer said. “The firm has a well-earned reputation as an industry leader, with a client-centric approach and a culture of collegiality and collaboration. O’Melveny is a perfect fit for me and my clients.”
Shaffer earned his J.D. magna cum laude from George Mason University School of Law, his M.S. from Virginia Commonwealth University, and his B.A. from Georgetown University.
